From high school teammates to elite coaching duo, Alex Mirabal’s lifelong bond with Mario Cristobal is fueling the Miami Hurricanes' resurgence through dominant recruiting and top-tier offensive line development.
Miami, Fla. – If Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal were to trust one person with his life, Alex Mirabal would likely be a prime candidate. They’ve built a lifelong chemistry dating back to the 1980s at Christopher Columbus High School. Cristobal and Mirabal shared the offensive line before going off to college.
It’s well documented that Cristobal attended the University of Miami and won two National Championships. Meanwhile, Mirabal attended Miami-Dade College and Florida International University before returning to Columbus–old stomping grounds–and becoming an American History and Government teacher. He took on several different roles involving athletics:
- Assistant track and field coach
- Volunteer offensive line coach
- Strength and conditioning coordinator
- Running backs coach
- Varsity offensive line coach
After years of going their separate ways, an opportunity to reunite arose for the two former high school teammates.
Cristobal took a head-coaching job with the FIU Panthers and hired Mirabal on his staff. After a six-year reunion, both South Florida natives split ways again. In 2018, they would meet again, but on the West Coast of the United States of America. Cristobal took a head-coaching job with the Oregon Ducks, bringing Mirabal with him.
Both made strides with the Pacific NorthWest program, but after four full seasons, a call was made to return home. Entering year five with the Hurricanes, the Coral Gables program has successfully turned around, following a National Championship appearance.
However, it was a difficult process to reach the big stage–involving elite recruiting. Mirabal has done a tremendous job in signing highly ranked talent–three five-star offensive linemen, including All-American Francis Mauigoa, who was selected with the No. 10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.
Cristobal doesn’t trust anyone else to do a better job in developing an elite offensive line than Mirabal. Last season, en route to the National Championship game, the Hurricanes only allowed 20 total sacks–16th best in the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to NCAA Statistics.
Following spring practices and ahead of fall camp, Mirabal is looking to fill several voids after losing four key starters from the offensive line. However, he has the advantage of having five-star freshman Jackson Cantwell to plug in.
Mirabal is emerging as one of the nation’s top recruiters–arguably the best.
The Hurricanes have title aspirations ahead of the upcoming season, but there are questions surrounding the next offensive line group. However, Cristobal isn’t worried because Mirabal is working towards a solution.
