Veteran safety Jakobe Thomas brings SEC experience and playmaking ability, transforming the Miami Hurricanes' defense and igniting their national championship pursuit.
The Miami Hurricanes' defense is experiencing a massive turnaround compared to how it was a couple of years ago. Even last season, when quarterback Cam Ward led one of the best offenses in the nation, the team was incapable of getting crucial stops. It took the right personnel to change things, including talent from the transfer portal, which is where Jakobe Thomas comes into the picture.
The redshirt senior was in the SEC with the Tennessee Volunteers, finishing the regular season with a 10-2 record and making the College Football Playoffs, but falling to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round, with a final score of 42-17, who later won the National Championship. The veteran safety then entered the transfer portal, deciding to join the Hurricanes. With one final season of eligibility left, the 22-year-old knew the choice was critical.
"When I was in the portal," Thomas said. "I knew this was [going to be] my last year. I had to make it count. I saw the vision with coach [Mario] Cristobal. He's not the type of guy to bs you. He tells you what's going to happen and just believed in me as a person first. Coach [Corey] Hetherman sat me down and explained everything to me, told me what I could do for him, and I wanted an opportunity somewhere. They gave me a great opportunity and there was no way I could say 'no' to it."
After playing in all 12 regular-season games, the veteran safety recorded 49 total tackles, 31 solos and 18 assists, 3.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, including a pick-six against the North Carolina State Wolfpack, three sacks, four passes defended, and two forced fumbles.
In the matchup against the Florida Gators, after sacking quarterback DJ Lagway, Thomas honored a Hurricanes legend in linebacker Ray Lewis, doing his famous "tunnel dance" celebration.
After the team's victory against the Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals, it was also personal redemption for the Tennessee native, given the results of last year. However, the page has flipped, as the Hurricanes are now set to face the Ole Miss Rebels in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl semifinals. It's going to be another exciting showdown on Thursday, Jan 8th, at Glendale, Arizona, 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN.
The goal of competing for a National Championship is within grasp. After overcoming what is arguably the toughest path in these College Football Playoffs, there's no doubt in their resilience and readiness for another high-pressure situation.
