One of the key factors in the Miami Hurricanes' success in these College Football Playoffs has been relying on the experience of quarterback Carson Beck. The redshirt senior understands what it takes to win in high-pressure moments, given his tenure with the Georgia Bulldogs, including as a member of two National Championship seasons. The 23-year-old is leading a legendary program to new heights.
In the first round, against the Texas A&M Aggies, Beck didn't have a marvelous game. He completed 14 of 20 passes, 70 percent, for 103 yards, recording a touchdown. The offense was stagnant for the majority of the game, outside of running back Mark Fletcher Jr. carrying them. However, Beck didn't appear bothered by the hostile environment, despite the mediocre performance.
In the following game, in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals against the reigning champion Ohio State Buckeyes, the young star turned it up a notch. He completed 19 of 26 passes, 73.1 percent, for 138 yards, recording a touchdown. Beck isn't known as a quarterback who utilizes his legs, but in the fourth quarter, in a third-and-11 situation, he rushed for 11 yards and converted a critical first down. It showed his passion and will to do anything for the team.
Afterwards, the Hurricanes made history by upsetting the Buckeyes, with a final score of 24-14, advancing to the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl semifinals. They had to await the results between the Ole Miss Rebels and the Bulldogs to learn the official matchup. There was a possibility for Beck to reunite with his former program, but as a competitor. However, the Rebels finished on top, after a final score of 39-34.
Beck clarified that his motive to follow the game had no "emotional" impact and it was strictly business.
"Honestly, the whole entire game, I was just dissecting both of the defenses," he said. "Trying to see what they were doing. Getting a head start on preparation for this week. That's really what my focus was during the game."
No doubt had the Bulldogs advanced, it would've added an edge to Beck's competitiveness. Whether or not the Florida native would've admitted it, it's no secret that every athlete seeks payback when playing their old team.
However, that's not the reality of the situation, and the Hurricanes will face another SEC program in the College Football Playoffs, which is set for Jan. 8th, 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time, at Glendale, Arizona, on ESPN.
