The Miami Hurricanes battle elite competition for four-star receiver Eric McFarland, who recently visited campus. A star's emergence could sway his decision.
Coming off a National Championship appearance, the Miami Hurricanes have been aggressive on the high school recruiting trail. After securing the latest commitment from four-star quarterback Israel Abrams, the 2027 class continues its construction. The group already features a couple of elite wide receivers in Nick Lennear and Ah’Mari Stevens, but the program has an opportunity to secure another.
It was reported on Saturday, April 5, that four-star wide receiver Eric McFarland is currently drawn to 11 schools, including the Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas A&M Aggies, LSU Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats, Texas Longhorns, Tennessee Volunteers, and UNLV Rebels.
The Las Vegas, Nevada, native currently attends IMG Academy, a private boarding school located in Bradenton, Florida. He caught 29 passes for 595 yards, scoring 11 touchdowns in nine games.
McFarland is ranked 22nd nationally, fourth among wide receivers, and third in the state of Florida for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida State Seminoles, South Florida Bulls, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, USC Trojans, Oregon Ducks, Ole Miss Rebels, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Washington Huskies, Michigan Wolverines, Missouri Tigers, Kansas State Wildcats, North Carolina Tar Heels, and SMU Mustangs, along with others.
The Buckeyes were among the earliest to present the prospect with a scholarship and hosted several unofficial visits. It could be an indication of where the recruiting process is heading. However, McFarland recently took a trip down to South Florida for a visit with the Hurricanes on Saturday, April 4. The program is historically known for defense, but there’s been a recent surge at the wide receiver position after Malachi Toney’s historic freshman season.
The 18-year-old caught a nation’s high 109 passes for 1,211 yards, scoring 13 total touchdowns. The homegrown star quickly grew in popularity on and off the field.
The emergence of Toney put the Hurricanes in a strong position to secure top-market wide receivers, with a chance to add McFarland to the list. The four-star recruit reclassified from 2028 to 2027. As McFarland continues to narrow down all options, a decision is looming sooner than originally anticipated.
As spring training is underway, the Hurricanes will remain aggressive in the recruiting process. They will host several other prospects in the upcoming months, looking to add more talent for the future.
McFarland will likely schedule other visits before reaching a final decision.
