Jalaythan Mayfield, a dominant four-star linebacker, has set a commitment date, with the Miami Hurricanes vying for his talent. Which contender will secure this defensive playmaker?

As spring training is in motion, the Miami Hurricanes continue leaving a strong trail in the high school recruiting path. It was reported on Wednesday, April 1, that Jalaythan Mayfield has set a commitment date for Friday, July 17. He’s a four-star linebacker who currently attends Lincolnton High School, a public institution located in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Mayfield recorded 261 total tackles, 228 solos and 33 assists, 44 tackles for loss, and 16 sacks in 24 games over two seasons.

As the prospect is a few months away from announcing his decision, five programs are in the running to the finish line: Oregon Ducks, Kentucky Wildcats, Georgia Bulldogs, reigning National Champion Indiana Hoosiers, and Hurricanes.

Mayfield is listed at 6-2, 230 pounds, with an 80-inch wingspan, and ranked 204th nationally, 18th among linebackers, and 10th in the state of North Carolina for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Charlotte 49ers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Texas A&M Aggies, USC Trojans, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ole Miss Rebels, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Texas Longhorns, Louisville Cardinals, and Virginia Tech Hokies, along with several others.

Last season, the Hurricanes experienced a resurgence on the defensive side of the field. They were led by edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., both of whom declared for the upcoming NFL Draft and are projected to be first-round selections. Despite the departures, the production is expected to carry over into next season.

Defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman led the charge on the sidelines, played a huge factor in the transformation, and was in the running for the Broyles Award, which honors the nation’s top assistant. Also, he’s the linebackers coach, which could play a role in Mayfield’s recruitment.

The Lincolnton native will take an official visit with each of the finalists in the upcoming months:

- Indiana: April 17

- April: May 29

- Oregon: June 5

- Georgia: June 12

- Kentucky: June 19

Each program will have an opportunity to leave a strong final impression on Mayfield before reaching a final decision. He appears ready to seek a new home outside of his home state.

Coming off a National Championship appearance, the Hurricanes have gravitated towards several high school recruits. They’re building towards a strong 2027, which could feature the talented linebacker in the near future.
