Four-star athlete Tristin Hughes narrows his elite list to six, with the Miami Hurricanes battling powerhouses for his versatile talent. He's a game-changer on both offense and defense.

As the Miami Hurricanes are hosting unofficial and official visits, numerous high school recruits view them as a legitimate landing destination, including four-star athlete Tristin Hughes. He’s listed as a safety and currently attends Rocky River High School, a public institution located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Hughes has experience playing on both sides of the field. He recorded 65 total tackles, 39 solos and 26 assists, three tackles for loss, three passes defended, and three interceptions in 14 games as a junior. Offensively, the four-star recruit caught 75 passes and carried 63 times for 1,723 total yards, scoring 28 touchdowns, including a pick-six.

The four-star recruit is ranked 372nd nationally, 32nd among safeties, and 14th in the state of Ohio for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. Hughes announced on social media that he’s down to six programs: Hurricanes, Auburn Tigers, Virginia Tech Hokies, Kentucky Wildcats, Michigan Wolverines, and Purdue Boilermakers.

Hughes received offers from numerous schools, including the Louisville Cardinals, Pitt Panthers, Michigan State Spartans, and BYU Cougars, among others. He originally committed to the Syracuse Orange before decommitting on Feb. 19. Hughes has official summer visits scheduled:

- Cardinals: May 29

- Kentucky: June 5

- Purdue: June 12

- Syracuse: June 19

The four-star athlete has yet to make an official or unofficial visit to Coral Gables. It would benefit the Hurricanes to show him around campus to gain further attraction in the recruit process.

Coming off a National Championship, the program seeks to remain competitive. The team’s defense significantly improved under first-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman, who was a finalist for the Broyles Award, honoring the nation’s top assistant.

Despite losing key secondary players to cornerback Keionte Scott and safety Jakobe Thomas to the upcoming NFL Draft, the Hurricanes acquired Omar Thornton and Conrad Hussey through the transfer portal. Also, they retained core pieces, such as Damari Brown, OJ Frederique Jr., Xavier Lucas, Zechariah Poyser, and Bryce Fitzgerald.

The Hurricanes have established a new culture and standard, which is attracting numerous high school recruits, including Hughes. However, they have serious competition to deal with before landing a commitment.

Hughes will likely play at safety at the collegiate level instead of consistently playing on both sides of the field like former Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver and cornerback Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

The Hurricanes have made an emphasis on recruiting in-house talent, but aren’t shying away from searching for talent elsewhere.
