As the Miami Hurricanes continue to schedule visits and host high school recruits, one target is set to make an official announcement. It was reported that five-star athlete Honor Fa’alave Johnson will commit to one of six program finalists on Saturday, March 14, on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube channel. He currently attends Cathedral Catholic High School, a private coeducational college preparatory institution located in San Diego, California.
Johnson plays a variety of positions, including wide receiver, running back, and safety. Defensively, he’s recorded 56 total tackles, 40 solos and 16 assists, two tackles for loss, and four interceptions in 17 total games over two seasons. The current high school junior is known to make reads and deliver impactful plays. Also, he caught 40 passes for 606 yards and rushed 140 times for 1,419 yards, scoring 30 total touchdowns.
The five-star recruit is listed at 6-1, 193 pounds, and ranked 18th nationally, first among athletes, and first in the state of California for the class of 2027, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. The six programs in the running: Hurricanes, LSU Tigers, USC Trojans, Texas Longhorns, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Oregon Ducks.
Johnson received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Michigan Wolverines, Ole Miss Rebels, and Washington Huskies, among many others. He made a few unofficial visits with the California Golden Bears, UCLA Bruins, Trojans, and Fighting Irish.
The Hurricanes retained their entire running back core of Mark Fletcher Jr., CharMar Brown, Girard Pringle Jr., and Jordan Lyle. Also, they acquired a few wide receivers from the transfer portal, such as Cooper Barkate, Vandrevius Jacobs, and Cam Vaughn.
Johnson would unlikely record many snaps on the offensive side of the field if the Hurricanes are his choice. He would likely primarily play as a safety next to Bryce Fitzgerald.
The most recent player to find success at playing both sides was wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter with the Colorado Buffaloes. He won the Heisman Trophy after the 2024 season.
The Ducks and Trojans are the only West Coast programs in the final six. Johnson appears to be comfortable with taking his talents far from home.
Coming off a National Championship, the Hurricanes’ defense improved significantly under first-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. He was in the running for the Broyles award, which honors the nation’s top assistant.
Saturday’s announcement could be a turning point for the Hurricanes.
