A dominant victory over Boston College vaults the Miami Hurricanes into the ACC semifinals as the program's former ace joins an elite coaching circle, eyeing a long-awaited postseason crown.
Miami, FL. – There has been a resurgence around major sports at the University of Miami. Both the football and basketball programs returned to postseason action, accomplishing significant turnarounds, but baseball is looking to achieve the same.
The Hurricanes are coming off a dominant 8-2 victory over the Boston College Eagles in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Sophomore center fielder Fabio Peralta and junior catcher Alex Sosa combined for four hits in eight at-bats, two runs scored, two home runs, and four runs batted in. The Hurricanes advanced to the semifinals and will face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. It will be the team’s first big test in the postseason.
Given a full day of rest on Friday, the Hurricanes will have an opportunity to properly prepare. However, the win over Boston College marked a career milestone for coach J.D. Arteaga, reaching 100 career wins as the program’s head coach. He joins Jim Morris and Gino DiMare in the exclusive club.
Coach Arteaga has strong ties to the University of Miami dating back to the early 1990s. He played for the program from 1994 to 1997, leading the team to four consecutive World Baseball Series appearances. However, Arteaga was unsuccessful in claiming a National Championship as a player. After four seasons, he had a 43-9 record, pitched in 457.4 innings, had a 3.37 ERA, and appeared in 79 games, including 72 starts.
The former ace was originally hired on coach Morris’ staff as a pitching coach on March 4, 2003. After several years with the program, he was promoted to head coach before the 2024 season. The Hurricanes quickly re-established contention status, including a Super Regionals appearance in 2025, the first since 2016.
Coach Arteaga faced adversity early this past regular season, losing three consecutive series against Florida, Boston College, and Duke. Afterwards, the team won six straight series, including five against ACC programs. The Hurricanes finished as the fifth seed and are currently one win away from competing for a conference title.
The program has not won an ACC Championship since 2008, coming close in 2023, but fell short after an 11-5 outing against the Clemson Tigers.
Coach Arteaga is helping baseball matter again as it once did in Coral Gables. There are still more steps to climb, but things are trending in the right direction. The Hurricanes are projected as a two-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Regardless of the path, coach Arteaga has eyes set on Omaha.
