Coach Jai Lucas leads a revamped roster to Las Vegas for a high-stakes showdown against TCU, testing the Miami Hurricanes' championship mettle against elite competition in this premier in-season event.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program is embracing tough competition for the 2026-27 season. They will reportedly face the Florida Gators, who recently retained center and reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year Rueben Chinyelu for a senior year, in the opener at Tampa. It will be the second consecutive season the Hurricanes face the Gainesville in-state rival.
However, the competition is only growing as coach Jai Lucas and the team will participate in the Players Era Tournament. The event was founded in 2024, continuing to see growth in popularity, and agreed to a multi-year broadcast agreement with ESPN. The tournament takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Hurricanes are officially scheduled to face the TCU Horned Frogs on Nov. 24. If won, they will face the winner of the Michigan Wolverines-Creighton Bluejays matchup on Nov. 26. It’s a first-time invitation for the program.
Following a historic 26-9 turnaround season, coach Lucas has delivered Hurricanes basketball back to relevancy. Despite several key departures, the 37-year-old successfully revamped the roster. After retaining Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen as sophomores, they brought in a couple of top-market transfer portal players in guard Acaden Lewis and center Somto Cyril.
Coach Lucas landed a few other intriguing pieces, such as Robert Morris transfer and Horizon League Player of the Year forward DeSean Goode. He’s coming off a career 57.1 percent shooting season from behind the arc on high volume. Plus Brent Bland, Nick Dorn, and Quin Berger.
The Hurricanes have a couple of incoming freshmen in local five-star Galeb Gaskins and Chris Birden.
The Horned Frogs dealt with seven departures to the transfer portal, including junior David Punch to the Texas Longhorns. He averaged 14.1 points on 50.3 percent shooting, 6.8 rebounds, two assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.9 blocks, appearing in 34 games, all starts. The program managed to retain other key pieces, including senior forward Xavier Edmonds and junior guard Micah Robinson.
After reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2023 Final Four run, coach Lucas is looking to lead the Hurricanes to new heights. The program hasn’t won an ACC Crown since 2013, but the current roster has the talent to deliver some hardware. The Hurricanes are projected to be ranked among the nation’s top 25.
The program has entered a new chapter in its history, one that looks to sustain contention for the foreseeable future.
