Ernest Udeh Jr.'s dominant rebounding and shot-blocking presence powered the Miami Hurricanes turnaround on the court. Now, the big man aims to make his NBA impact.

The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program will make a push towards contention after a 26-9 overall season, reaching the NCAA Tournament. The roster will feature significant changes as players depart through the transfer portal, with a few taking the next step in the sport, including Ernest Udeh Jr. The 22-year-old announced on social media that he has declared for the upcoming NBA Draft.

Despite only playing one season for the Hurricanes, Udeh Jr. averaged career highs across the board: 6.7 points on 72.7 percent shooting, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 33 games. The veteran big man wasn’t explosive, but impactful in doing the little things that matter. He was a lob threat, crashes the glass, and a rim protector.

Udeh Jr. recorded six double-doubles with the Hurricanes, the most in a single collegiate season. Also, he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Defensive team.

The Orlando, Florida, native played a pivotal role in the program’s turnaround. Alongside seniors Tre Donaldson and Malik Reneau, he provided leadership and production throughout the Hurricanes’ season. Despite a limited role, Udeh Jr. embraced it rather than rebelled.

The 2026 NBA Draft is likely to feature significant talent, including Cam Boozer, Caleb Wilson, AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Mikel Brown Jr., and Thomas Vaughn, alongside several other highly-touted prospects.

However, Udeh Jr. isn’t projected to hear his name called by either league commissioner Adam Silver or deputy Mark Tatum.

The 22-year-old is listed at 6-11, 250 pounds. He’s a lengthy center who doesn’t need the basketball to be effective, has a high vertical, and is capable of defending all five positions.

The standout flaw of Udeh Jr.’s game is free-throw shooting. In four collegiate seasons, he averaged 54.6 percent when at the “charity strike.”

Despite not being projected to be drafted, the veteran center will have opportunities to reach an NBA franchise’s radar. He will likely participate in numerous workouts to leave a lasting impression on scouts and front office members.

Organizations that could utilize Udeh Jr.’s talents and services are the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Lakers, among others. He would likely start as a G-League development project and a potential two-way contract candidate.

Despite playing just one season with the Hurricanes, the homegrown prospect contributed to a historic turnaround for the program. Udeh Jr.’s rise to the league will have its challenges, but the 22-year-old will have opportunities to showcase his talents and impact.
