Fresh off a conference title at Duke, Darian Mensah brings championship pedigree and elite passing stats to Coral Gables, fueled by a revamped offensive line and explosive weapons.
MIAMI, Fla. – Over the last couple of years, the Miami Hurricanes have found success with transfer portal quarterbacks. It started in 2024 with Cam Ward and Carson Beck last season. Along with individual success, they left the Coral Gables program in better shape upon arriving on the scene.
Before the recent football transfer portal window closed, Darian Mensah decided to join the Hurricanes and carry on the trend. He’s coming off a remarkable season at Duke – leading the Blue Devils to a conference title. Mensah completed 334 of 500 passes (66.8 percent), throwing for an ACC-leading 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, plus six interceptions in 14 games.
The 21-year-old is bringing championship pedigree to the Hurricanes, but eyeing a bigger prize.
According to On3, Mensah is ranked the Atlantic Coast Conference’s best quarterback entering the 2026 season. Given previous production and already earning All-ACC honors, he’s poised for a bigger breakout season.
Duke’s offensive line allowed 28 total sacks and ranked 84th in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Despite the lack of elite protection, Mensah executed effectively. The Hurricanes’ success starts with dominating matchups at the line of scrimmage. Last season, the offensive line gave up 20 sacks in 16 games and ranked 16th in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Despite losing four key starters to the NFL Draft, including All-American right tackle Francis Mauigoa (selected No. 10 by the New York Giants), the program is relying on in-house talent to fill the voids. Samson Okunlola, Ryan Rodriguez, and Matthew McCoy provide a veteran presence for projected new starters Max Buchanan and Jackson Cantwell.
If they provide close to elite protection for Mensah, good things are guaranteed to happen. When untouched, he threw for 28 touchdowns, according to Pro Football Focus.
Plus, the amount of weapons surrounding Mensah will help make him look good. He will have a rising star in Malachi Toney to target, along with established chemistry with Cooper Barkate from playing together at Duke. The rest of the wide receiver core is looking stacked: South Carolina transfer Vandrevius Jacobs, Joshua Moore, West Virginia transfer Cam Vaughn, Daylyn Upshaw, and freshman Somourian Wingo.
In the backfield, Mensah will have several effective running backs to hand the ball to, including local star Mark Fletcher Jr.
The new Hurricanes quarterback has the talent – internally and all around the field – to be among the nation’s best at the position. After accomplishing a conference title, the National Championship is the next goal to reach, which Mensah is expected to deliver.
