The Miami Hurricanes secure offensive and defensive architects for national title pursuit, retaining key play-callers who ignited historic scoring and shutdown defense.

The Miami Hurricanes signed both offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman to multi-year extensions, according to ESPN. Both played a critical role on the sidelines in the program’s route to a National Championship appearance. Despite having opportunities for jobs with other programs or NFL organizations, they chose to stay in Coral Gables, Florida.

Coach Dawson officially joined the Hurricanes as an offensive coordinator on Feb. 16, 2023. The team went 7-6 in his first season, primarily starting Tyler Van Dyke at quarterback, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 65.8 completion percentage. Afterwards, the program acquired Cam Ward through the transfer portal, which led to historic offensive production. The Hurricanes were the highest-scoring team in the Football Bowl Subdivision for the 2024-25 season, averaging 43.9 points in 13 games.

Despite missing the College Football Playoffs with a 10-2 overall regular season record, Ward became the first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, currently with the Tennessee Titans.

The Hurricanes acquired another top-market transfer portal quarterback, Carson Beck, who wasn’t as explosive after coming off UCL surgery in the SEC Championship game while on the Georgia Bulldogs. The team started the season 5-0 before suffering two losses to the Louisville Cardinals and SMU Mustangs. Afterwards, the Hurricanes went 4-0 as the offense picked up its production, including Beck. He completed 89 of 112 passes, 79.5 completion percentage, threw for 1,125 yards, 11 touchdowns, and one interception down the stretch.

The program made the College Football Playoffs for the first time in its history, reaching the National Championship game after beating the Texas A&M Aggies, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Ole Miss Rebels along the way.

Despite falling short in a 27-21 outing against the Indiana Hoosiers, the Hurricanes acquired another top-market quarterback from the transfer portal in All-ACC Darian Mensah, while revamping the wide receiver core with All-ACC Cooper Barkate, Vandrevius Jacobs, and Cam Vaughn.

The Hurricanes officially hired Corey Hetherman as the defensive coordinator on Jan 12, 2025. He was previously with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, whose scoring defense ranked fifth in FBS as a staff member. As the Hurricanes’ offense was surging, the success wasn’t translating on the other side of the field. The defense ranked No. 70 in the 2024-25 season, allowing 25.3 points a game.

Hetherman elevated the Hurricanes to the fifth-best scoring defense in FBS, only giving up 14.8 points in 16 games. He had arguably the best defensive end combo in the nation with All-American Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, both of whom declared for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Despite other key departures up front and in the secondary, the Hurricanes have in-house talent looking to step up, plus other transfer portal additions, such as edge rusher Damon Wilson II and defensive back Omar Thornton.

Hetherman established a defensive identity surrounding physicality, violence, intensity, and resilience.

As the Hurricanes secure both coordinators for the foreseeable future, the opportunity to contend can continue.
