A minor back issue raises questions for Miami Hurricanes' Francis Mauigoa, a top offensive lineman, as his NFL Draft stock hangs in the balance.

The first day of the NFL Draft is 15 days away, a significant moment for numerous prospects. There are a few former Miami Hurricanes players projected to be first-round selections, including offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa. He played three seasons with the program, appearing and starting in 42 games, never sitting on the sidelines.

The 20-year-old was able to end his Hurricanes tenure in the National Championship game. Despite falling short in a 27-21 outing against the Indiana Hoosiers, the American Samoan native left a significant imprint on the program.

Despite the talent and production, there might be concerns about Mauigoa a couple of weeks away from day one of the NFL Draft. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the highly-touted offensive tackle will be at the Combine Rechecks on Friday due to a minor back issue. Mauigoa will undergo additional imaging, but isn’t expected to need immediate surgery. He didn’t participate in the NFL Combine, but was without limitations at his Pro Day at the Hurricanes’ practice facility, which featured personnel from all 32 teams.

Mauigoa is a projected top-10 talent, arguably the best offensive lineman of the class. However, the significance of the back injury could impact where he officially lands on the draft boards.

In his final season with the Hurricanes, Mauigoa was named All-ACC First Team, a consensus First-Team All-American, and the ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner.

The offensive line played a pivotal role in the program’s recent success. Alongside him were left tackle Markel Bell, right guard Anez Cooper, and center James Brockermeyer, all of whom declared for the upcoming NFL Draft. Mauigo was part of a strong unit that provided high-quality protection for quarterback Carson Beck.

Ahead of the NFL Combine, the projected first-round talent confirmed to have meetings with the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals.

The Arizona Cardinals, who own the third pick, are viewed as another potential landing destination. They allowed the fifth-most sacks last season, with 59 total.

However, depending on where Mauigoa goes, organizations could look to move him to guard. He stated that there would be no resistance to a potential shift in position if it were called upon.

The Hurricanes have a rich history of developing NFL talent and Mauigoa will soon be a part of it. The Draft will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 23, and will be streaming on the NFL Network, ESPN, and ABC.
