After limited playing time, the promising guard seeks a fresh start, leaving the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball program to explore new collegiate opportunities.
The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program seeks to build off a successful 26-9 overall season. They will retain core pieces in Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen, while others seek opportunities elsewhere. A few days after the NCAA basketball transfer portal opened, it was reported on Friday that guard Jordyn Kee has entered it.
As a redshirt freshman, the 20-year-old only appeared in eight games, including in a blowout 76-54 win over the Boston College Eagles. He recorded three total points, three total rebounds, and three total assists in limited action on the court.
Kee transferred to the Coral Gables program after one season with the Georgia Bulldogs, where he originally redshirted to preserve NCAA eligibility.
The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native was a three-star recruit coming from Sagemont Preparatory School. The prospect guard averaged 11.2 points on 48 percent shooting, 43 percent from three-point range, 3.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.4 steals in 38 games as a senior.
Kee was ranked 308th nationally, 40th among combo guards, and 27th in the state for the recruiting class of 2024, according to 247Sports Composite. He received interest and offers from a few “Power Five” programs, including the Florida State Seminoles and Missouri Tigers, before committing to the Bulldogs on June 1, 2024.
Coach Jai Lucas wanted to establish a sense of “Florida Pride” as the program was rebuilding. Kee fit the profile, but couldn’t carve out a consistent role off the bench. Senior Tre Donaldson, junior Tru Washington, and freshman Dante Allen were the biggest factors in the backcourt.
As Kee departs, the Hurricanes are working towards revamping the roster. They’re in the mix for a couple of top-market transfer portal recruits, such as center Somto Cyril and guard Acaden Lewis.
Also, five-star forward and Miami native Caleb Gaskins is set to join the program for next season.
After finishing third in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Hurricanes seek to remain competitive. Despite losing key leaders and All-ACC talent in Tre Donaldson, Malik Reneau, and Ernest Udeh Jr., coach Lucas will have opportunities to fill those voids with greater prospects.
Kee could carve out a decent recruiting process while in the transfer portal, but given the lack of action at the collegiate level, it will be a challenge to find a new home right away. In high school, the former three-star prospect proved to be an impactful scorer and facilitator; all that’s needed is an opportunity to show more.
