A key shooter departs as the Miami Hurricanes roster reshuffling continues. The guard's next move could spark further portal activity.
The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program is coming off a significant season, finishing with a 26-9 overall record and reaching the NCAA Tournament Round of 32. However, the next step for coach Jai Lucas will be to revamp the roster and achieve new heights. As seniors Tre Donaldson, Malik Reneau, and Ernest Udeh Jr. depart, who each played significant roles, significant changes are expected.
The earlier confirmations were that Dante Allen committed to returning, but Tru Washington was entering the transfer portal. The domino effect has officially begun within the Hurricanes’ roster, with more new unraveling.
The latest report was that guard Noam Dovrat will enter the transfer portal. As a junior, he averaged 3.8 points on 45.2 percent shooting, 46.6 percent from three-point range, and an assist in 27 game appearances. The 23-year-old played a limited role off the bench, primarily responsible to shoot from behind the arc.
Dovrat earned an extended opportunity towards the end of the regular season as freshman forward Timotej Malovec was sidelined due to a back injury. In the final three games, he averaged 11 points on 68.8 percent three-point shooting in 13.7 minutes.
As the Israel native enters his senior season, the chance to compete and earn significant playing time will likely play a factor in where he decides to play next.
Dovrat isn’t just a veteran of college basketball, but has six years of experience in playing international basketball. He provides size as a guard, listed at 6-5, 213 pounds.
The Hurricanes will look to revamp the depth chart, especially given the lack of bench production throughout the season. The team finished 299th in Division I basketball, averaging just 16.31 reserve points.
Coach Jai Lucas relied heavily on Donaldson, Reneau, Udeh Jr., Washington, and Shelton Henderson, plus Allen, all of whom were among the leaders in minutes.
The Hurricanes still have several undecided players, such as center Salih Altuntas, Malovec, forward Marcus Allen, guard John Laboy II, and guard Jordyn Kee.
The program has an incoming five-star recruit in forward Caleb Gaskins, who was named a McDonald’s All-American. The Miami native came from Miami Columbus High School, a private college preparatory institution located in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
The Hurricanes look to remain competitive, but securing top-market players through the transfer portal could be the difference-maker in coach Lucas’ ability to raise the ceiling of the team moving forward.
