From flipping commitment to shattering postseason records, Mark Fletcher Jr. fuels the Miami Hurricanes' resurgence as local billboards celebrate the star running back’s transformative impact on the local hometown program.
Miami, FL. – Among the several factors for the Miami Hurricanes’ turnaround was Mark Fletcher Jr. The star running back was close to not joining the program as a four-star recruit from American Heritage High School in Broward County. Fletcher Jr. originally committed to Ohio State before flipping to the University of Miami ahead of National Signing Day. It wound up becoming the best decision for him.
Fletcher Jr. has emerged as one of college football’s most prolific stars coming off a historic playoff run: rushing 75 times for a record-breaking 507 yards, scoring three total touchdowns in four games, including the National Championship.
The 21-year-old returns to the Hurricanes for a senior season. He’s made a tremendous impact on the program and community–so much that the love is being shared back. In a video posted on Sunday, May 31, Fletcher Jr.’s mother, Linda, saw a billboard with the local star running back on it.
"I just had to U-turn," she said. "Who's that on the billboard? That's my baby!"
The picture came from when the Hurricanes won the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals over the Buckeyes. Fletcher Jr. was named the Offensive Player of the Game. He rushed 19 times for 90 yards, scoring a receiving touchdown in the second quarter. The Hurricanes dominated for the majority of the game–never trailing.
Fletcher Jr. joined the program a year after undergoing a 5-7 season. Despite having opportunities to go to immediate-winning teams, he became a vocal point in coach Mario Cristobal’s rebuild. Now, Fletcher Jr. is set for a send-off season, leaving the program better than founded.
The Hurricanes retained the entire running back core behind the local star, including CharMar Brown, Girard Pringle Jr., and Jordan Lyle. It’s a rare case in college sports to have continuity, especially with the transfer portal. Regardless of hiring a new running backs coach, Favian Upshaw, who was previously with the Denver Broncos, the production is expected to carry over for the upcoming season.
Fletcher Jr. will be one of the most prolific prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft. As the lead running back for the Hurricanes, he will have opportunities to climb the boards and projections.
The program is viewed as an early National Championship contender–successfully revamping the roster with top-market transfer portal acquisitions, including All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah. Despite losing several key factors, including edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., the Hurricanes aren’t looking to take any steps back.
