Mario Cristobal’s roster overhaul pays off as elite transfers and blue-chip recruits land top spots, signaling a championship-caliber resurgence for "The U" in Coral Gables.
Miami, Fla. – Before the start of last season, the Miami Hurricanes brought in 20 transfers, including highly touted quarterback Carson Beck. Alongside them came 21 new freshmen from the 2025 recruiting class, including three-star wide receiver Malachi Toney. Coming off a 10-3 season–blowing a chance at winning the Atlantic Coast Conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoffs–the program was desperately seeking a resurgence.
As coach Mario Cristobal entered year four at the helm, with a new defensive coordinator in Corey Hetherman, there was pressure for the team to get over the hump. Following a 10-2 regular season, responding to a couple of hiccups against the Louisville Cardinals and SMU Mustangs, the Hurricanes barely reached the College Football Playoffs and went as far as the National Championship game.
Despite falling short of the ultimate prize, “The U” has reached a status it hasn’t in over two decades.
The Hurricanes successfully revamped the roster with 13 new transfers, including another top-market quarterback in Darian Mensah, plus 29 new freshmen from the 2026 recruiting class, including five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell. The new additions are expected to deliver an immediate winning impact.
In a recent ranking by ESPN of top-100 newcomers (transfers and recruits) ahead of the season, three Hurricanes were mentioned within the first 20 names.
Finishing at No. 4 is Mensah. The redshirt junior is coming off an All-ACC caliber season with the Duke Blue Devils: completing 339 of 500 passes, 66.8 completion percentage, throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, in 14 games, all starts. The 21-year-old delivered the program its first ACC Football Championship since 1989.
On the Hurricanes, Mensah is expected to take another step in production. Given all the weapons surrounding him, there are championship aspirations surrounding Coral Gables.
The next is edge rusher Damon Wilson II at No. 9. The local Venice native is one of the 13 transfers, previously with the Missouri Tigers. He logged 23 total tackles, nine solos and 14 assists, 9.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and a three-yard interception against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Given the departures of Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., both first-round selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, Wilson II is expected to fill the void and take another step in production.
Finally, at No. 15 is Cantwell. According to 247Sports Composite, the 18-year-old is ranked second nationally, second among offensive tackles, and the best player in Missouri. He stacked 459 pancake blocks in 45 games at Nixa High School.
Arriving at Coral Gables, Cantwell is the projected starting left tackle. He’s listed at 6-8, 330 pounds.
The only other Hurricanes player to be mentioned is wide receiver Cooper Barkate at No. 38. He was Mensah’s teammate at Duke, catching 72 passes for 1,106 yards, scoring seven touchdowns in 14 games, all starts.
There are numerous talented players surrounding the program, looking to pick up where they previously left off.
