Survival in Chapel Hill and a chaotic weekend of upsets keep the Miami Hurricanes atop the AP poll as a high-stakes, prime-time showdown with Notre Dame awaits.
Chapel Hill, (NC) – As the Miami Hurricanes survived a back-and-forth shootout against UNC, while the rest of college football continued with its unnatural chaos, it was enough of a win to stay ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press' latest Top 25 poll, which was released on Sunday.
The biggest upset of the night was No. 2 Ohio State losing to USC 30-18 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Head coach Ryan Day started freshman Luke Fahey at quarterback and the 19-year-old's first big game didn't go entirely well. He completed 21 of 38 passes (55.3 percent) while throwing for 260 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.
Superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith finished with just 83 yards on 10 catches and scored a touchdown.
The Buckeyes' loss created separation from UCLA, which is currently at the very top of the Big 10 standings, following a 27-0 win over Nevada. Ohio State fell out of the top 10, ranked at No. 11 for the week.
Meanwhile, in Atlanta (GA), the Florida-Georgia rivalry was completely one-sided, as the No. 3 Bulldogs beat the No. 17 Gators in a dominant 27-8 outing. Head coach Jon Sumrall played both Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. at quarterback, but both combined for three interceptions and no passing touchdowns.
Georgia moved up to No. 2 in the latest rankings and Florida stayed inside but dropped to No. 25.
No. 4 Indiana survived Minnesota in a 23-16 outing; however, back-to-back 60-yard field goals forced overtime. Head coach Curt Cignitti had to play backup Grant Wilson for most of the second half as starter Josh Hoover left early with a right arm injury. The seventh-year veteran completed nine of 17 passes (52.9 percent) while throwing for 156 yards and the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
The Hoosiers dropped to No. 6 for the week.
While the Hurricanes found a way to win at Chapel Hill for the first time since the 2017 college football season, everyone else has slipped. Whether it's injured quarterbacks or a lack of execution, every snap is becoming more valuable, especially with the College Football Playoff rankings soon to start. The Hurricanes will prepare for what has been regarded as the most important week on the regular-season schedule: Notre Dame.
It was announced that ESPN's College GameDay will be present at South Bend, Indiana, for the prime-time matchup between the historic rivals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. E.T. and will be televised on NBC and Peacock.
