Sophomore standout Bryce Fitzgerald looks to make program history after leading the ACC in interceptions, anchoring a revamped secondary poised for another deep National Championship run.
Miami, FL. – Ahead of fall camp, the Miami Hurricanes have several returning pieces looking to take on expanded roles. Given several departures to the transfer portal and the NFL Draft, the voids create opportunities for others to step up. Local sophomore safety Byrce Fitzgerald is looking to make a strong impact on and off the field.
The Miami native delivered an immediate impact to the Hurricanes’ secondary as a freshman: 16 total tackles, 10 solos and six assists, a tackle for loss, eight passes defended, a sack, two passes broken up, and led the Atlantic Coast Conference with six interceptions, including the game-sealer against the Texas A&M Aggies in the first round of the College Football Playoffs.
Throughout spring practices, Fitzgerald alluded to being one of the team’s leaders, especially with the departures of cornerback Keionte Scott and safety Jakobe Thomas to the NFL. The 19-year-old has first-hand experience in competing against the nation’s best and finding success. Fitzgerald is emerging as one of college football’s most prolific defenders, so much so that he was named on the 2026 Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.
The award is named after Pro Football Hall of Famer and four-time Super Bowl champion Ronnie Lott. He played 14 years in the league, most notably 10 seasons as a left cornerback and free safety with the San Francisco 49ers. The defensive recipient of the award is recognized for delivering the biggest impact on the team.
Fitzgerald is projected to be a full-time starter this upcoming season. He served primarily as a key rotational piece as a freshman.
The former four-star recruit was a factor in the Hurricanes’ scoring defense going from among the worst in the nation to the fifth-best in the Football Bowl Subdivision last season. The defensive turnaround helped the team reach the National Championship game.
As an underclassman, Fitzgerald was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. He is poised to earn more and higher accolades, including All-ACC honors.
The Lott IMPACT Trophy started in 2004; the Hurricanes never had a finalist, let alone a recipient. Fitzgerald has a chance to make program history. Coming off a 13-3 season, the Hurricanes will have eyes from all over the nation.
The recipient of the award will be announced at a black-tie gala event at The Pacific Club, located in Newport Beach, California, on Dec. 9. If Fitzgerald lives up to expectations, an invitation is bound to come in.
