Mario Cristobal lands Texas powerhouse DeMarco Jenkins, bolstering a top-ranked recruiting class as the Miami Hurricanes continue an aggressive pursuit of dominant defensive talent for the 2027 season.
Miami, FL. – As summer approaches, the Miami Hurricanes have begun hosting official visits with several high school recruits. They had 15 commits for the 2027 class, including a couple of five-stars in cornerback Donte Wright and wide receiver Nick Lennear–both top-30 prospects.
The Coral Gables program is on pace to have a top-10 group in the nation, which is only looking better after securing a commitment from four-star defensive tackle DeMarco Jenkins. He currently attends Pearland High School, a public institution located in Brazoria County, Texas. In two seasons as a sophomore and junior, Jenkins logged 74 total tackles, plus 23 tackles for loss, nine sacks, 18 hurries, and two passes defended in 24 total games, according to MaxPreps.
The Texas native received interest and scholarship offers from numerous programs, including the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Houston Cougars, Texas A&M Aggies, Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Arizona State Sun Devils, Vanderbilt Commodores, Pitt Panthers, and Utah Utes, along with several others.
Jenkins narrowed the long list of options to four, including the SMU Mustangs, LSU Tigers, and Texas Longhorns, but decided the Hurricanes were the right route to go.
Coach Mario Cristobal continues to strengthen the philosophy of dominating matchups in the trenches, bringing in big bodies to deliver. Jenkins is listed at 6-3, 265 pounds, and ranked 378th nationally, 41st among defensive linemen, and 48th in the state of Texas for the 2027 class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He commits on Sunday, just a couple of days off from an official visit around the Coral Gables campus and facility.
The newest addition to the 2027 group becomes the second defensive lineman from Texas to commit to the Hurricanes, alongside four-star defensive tackle Ezekiel Ayangbile, who currently attends Langham Creek High School in Houston. Despite having several opportunities to play close to home, Jenkins decided to take on a new chapter in South Florida. He will develop closely under defensive tackles coach Damione Lewis.
The Hurricanes had the fifth-best scoring defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision. While edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. were mostly highlighted, others such as Armondo Blount, Ahmad Moten Sr., David Blay Jr., etc, played roles in the unit’s success.
The program is now up to 16 commits and ranked fourth nationally, with a 93 class score, according to On3. There are still several other recruits who are looking to join, but the Hurricanes continue to build a promising future.
