As the Miami Hurricanes look to make another push for the National Championship, the program seeks to secure a brighter future. Despite all the transfer portal additions, high school recruiting still plays an important role in winning. Last season, the Hurricanes had three impactful freshmen in safety Bryce Fitzgerald, running back Girard Pringle Jr., and star wide receiver Malachi Toney.
A great showing of how anyone can step up.
The Hurricanes could hope for the same in three-star tight end Anthony Cartwright, who secured official visit dates with the program on June 5 to 7.
The Michigan native is part of the 2027 recruiting class, ranked 20th among tight ends, sixth from the state, according to 247Sports Composite.
Cartwright made just one official visit during last summer, which was with the Hurricanes on June 5. There are other programs in the recruiting race, such as the Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, and Michigan State Wolverines.
Also, the Hurricanes are currently without a tight ends coach, as Cody Woodiel left for the SEC to join the Ole Miss Rebels.
Cartwright is a multi-sport athlete, having played football and basketball at Detroit Country Day School, a private insitution at Beverly Hills, Michigan. He's listed at 6-5, 235 pounds.
The Hurricanes' top tight end heading into next season is Elija Lofton, who's coming off a career year: catching 23 passes for 218 yards, scoring three touchdowns. He played in 15 games, but missed the National Championship after taking a hard tackle in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl semifinals against the Ole Miss Rebels.
Alex Bauman was behind Lofton in the depth chart, but won't be on the team next season due to not having extended NCAA eligibility.
The Hurricanes have an incoming freshman tight end in four-star Gavin Mueller.
Cartwright would have a solid chance of cracking the rotation as a freshman, especially with the high rate of college players entering the transfer portal. However, the Ducks, Wolverines, Buckeyes, and Gators provide extra wiggleroom for the current high school junior to play right away.
The Hurricanes securing multiple visits in the early stages of Cartwright's recruitment process could be an encouraging sign to be in the driver's seat to secure a commitment. Although anything can happen at anytime, especially for highly talented high schoolers.
Cartwright will likely secure visit dates with the other programs, evaluate all options, then make a final decision and announcement.
