The promising defensive lineman visits Coral Gables, eyeing a Miami Hurricanes program known for its physicality and coaching prowess. Could this be his future home?
Throughout April, several high school recruits will have an opportunity to watch the Miami Hurricanes practice in spring training, including Charles Ibe. He’s a three-star defensive lineman who currently attends Providence Day School, a private, co-educational, college preparatory institution located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ibe recorded 120 total tackles, 42 solos and 60 assists, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, and 19 hurries in 25 games over two seasons.
The prospect will visit the Hurricanes on Friday and Saturday, April 3 to 4.
Ibe is listed at 6-2, 285 pounds, and ranked 448th nationally, 46th among defensive linemen, and 11th in the state of North Carolina for the class of 2028, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He received offers from a few programs, such as the Boston College Eagles, Duke Blue Devils, Louisville Cardinals, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Charlotte 49ers. There are others with interests, but haven’t presented a scholarship yet, like the Florida Gators, reigning National Champion Indiana Hoosiers, North Carolina State Wolfpack, South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee Volunteers, and Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The three-star recruit will have an opportunity to watch the Hurricanes’ defensive line work under the leadership of coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor. Despite losing key pieces in edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr., they still have others ready to rise as factors, such as Damon Wilson II, Jarquez Carter, Ahmad Moten Sr., Armondo Blount, Marquise Lightfoot, and others.
En route to a National Championship appearance, the program experienced a significant defensive turnaround under first-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. He installed a foundation built around physicality, resilience, and violence.
After a two-day visit, the Hurricanes could leave an impact on Ibe’s early recruiting process. More programs will likely pick him up on their radar and present scholarship offers. However, the Hurricanes can leave an early impression on the high school sophomore. They are the only program that made the College Football Playoffs last season to present Ibe with an offer thus far.
The Hurricanes seek to remain in contention, especially by having one of the most productive defenses in the nation.
As Ibe’s recruiting process continues to unfold in the early stages, a two-day visit around the Coral Gables campus and facility could be a sneak peek at what the future holds for the North Carolina native. However, the three-star recruit still has time before reaching a final decision.
