He's traded explosive plays for total package potential. Can Vandrevius Jacobs become the Miami Hurricanes' complete receiver, mastering every aspect of the game?
The Miami Hurricanes’ offense is projected to rank among the best in the nation. Following star Malachi Toney’s historic freshman season, the program revamped the wide receiver core with transfer portal talent, including Vandrevius Jacobs. He’s coming off career-highs with the South Carolina Gamecocks: catching 32 passes for 538 yards, scoring four touchdowns in 12 games, including six starts.
Jacobs returns to the Atlantic Coast Conference after a couple of years in the Southeastern Conference. He played for the Florida State Seminoles as a freshman. As a new member of the Hurricanes, the 21-year-old seeks to make a jump in development.
“Going somewhere where I feel like I can be developed into a better receiver [after entering the transfer portal],” he said. “No disrespect to any other institution I’ve been to. I’m grateful for my time [with Florida State and South Carolina]. I just needed [to be] somewhere that I know that they want the best Vandrevius Jacobs. Help me be the best me. Help me master myself.”
Jacob’s four touchdowns with the Gamecocks all came from explosive plays, an average of 52 yards. However, the redshirt junior seeks to be an all-around threat.
“Being a full receiver [is the best version of Jacobs],” he added. “I don’t want to be known for just being one thing. I want to be known for being a total package, the total receiver. Do everything. I can do whatever you need me to do.”
The Fort Pierce, Florida, native is projected to be a starter, filling in the Keelan Marion void.
Alongside him, the Hurricanes brought in All-ACC Cooper Barkate and Cam Vaughn through the transfer portal. Also, Joshua Moore and Daylyn Upshaw are expected to step into expanded roles are limited freshman seasons. The offense will have high-quality weapons across the field.
Jacobs will have extra opportunities to make plays as Toney will likely be at the top of the defense’s scouting reports. He will have All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah throwing him the ball, who finished fifth in completion percentage among the Atlantic Coast Conference, 23rd in the nation. The mix of high accuracy and explosive abilities will make the Hurricanes’ offense dangerous.
The redshirt junior mentioned that the fastest he’s run was 22 miles an hour and a 4.44 in a 40-yard dash in high school.
Coming off a National Championship appearance, the program seeks to take things a step further for next season, which Jacobs will be a part of.
