Mario Cristobal’s elite transfer haul bolsters the Miami Hurricanes' title hopes, but a fresh offensive line must prove it can protect new star quarterback Darian Mensah this fall.
Miami, Fla. – Following a historic 13-3 season, including a National Championship appearance, the Miami Hurricanes successfully revamped the roster and filled numerous voids. The program is expected to continue its contention heading into a new college football year. However, new players mean different strengths and weaknesses.
A CBS Sports article discussed “one thing to love and hate” about each top-25 team following spring practices. The Hurricanes were the seventh-highest ranked on the list–behind the Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Georgia Bulldogs, and reigning National Champion Indiana Hoosiers.
When discussing the “loving” aspect of the Hurricanes, it noted that coach Mario Cristobal “won big” with the transfer portal. He signed a few top-market players, including All-ACC quarterback Darian Mensah. Alongside him came All-ACC wide receiver and Duke Blue Devils teammate Cooper Barkate.
They were factors in delivering the Durham, North Carolina, program its first ACC Football Championship since 1989. Despite not having the resume to reach the College Football Playoffs at Duke, Mensah and Barkate arrive at Coral Gables to deliver on National Championship aspirations.
The Hurricanes brought in 11 players through the portal, including South Carolina wide receiver transfer Vandrevius Jacobs, Missouri edge rusher transfer Damon Wilson II, West Virginia wide receiver transfer Cam Vaughn, and Boston College defensive back transfer Omar Thornton.
However, when finding the one thing to “hate,” CBS Sports chose the uncertainty of the offensive line. The Hurricanes lost four key starters upfront to the 2026 NFL Draft: left tackle Markel Bell (Philadelphia Eagles), right guard Anez Cooper (New York Jets), center James Brockermeyer (signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent), and All-American right tackle Francis Mauigoa (New York Giants).
In two of the four seasons since coach Cristobal took over the program, the Hurricanes finished within the top 20 of least sacks allowed in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The former offensive tackle has established an identity of dominating the trenches. Regardless of the departures, the Hurricanes already have players looking to fill the voids.
They have continuity with Samson Okunlola, Ryan Rodriguez, and Matthew McCoy–all of whom have experience. However, a newcomer looks to deliver an immediate impact in five-star recruit Jackson Cantwell. At Nixa High School, the Missouri native logged 459 pancake blocks, according to MaxPreps. Cantwell is listed at 6-8, 330 pounds.
Even with a fresh offensive line, coach Alex Mirabal is the right man for the job to prepare them for the upcoming season. The group doesn’t have to be as elite as last season, but provide good enough protection for Mensah to execute.
The Hurricanes’ current roster is considered one of the best in recent history. Following spring practices and ahead of fall camp, there are National Championship aspirations surrounding Coral Gables. As the Hurricanes prepare for a new season, the pressure will be on from the very first snap.
