Tom Izzo targets another elite playmaker as the Spartans battle five rivals for the Indiana standout, aiming to fortify East Lansing’s reputation as the nation’s premier point guard pipeline.

The Michigan State Spartans have another visit set, this one with Joshua Tyson, a four-star point guard out of La Lumiere School.

The official visit is set for Oct. 9, as Tyson will make his way to East Lansing with Michigan State sitting among his final six schools. Tyson previously announced the Spartans as one of the six programs still in the running for his commitment.

Tyson is yet another point guard to set up a visit with Tom Izzo in East Lansing as the Spartans continue to strive to be Point Guard University, currently led by Wooden Award betting favorite Jeremy Fears Jr. Tyson would have a ton to learn from Fears and Josiah Jervis, who currently sits in the backup role behind Fears.

Tyson is the No. 61-ranked player in the SportsCenter NEXT Top 100, a list that saw all four of Michigan State's 2026 commits included. That is something the Spartans will look to replicate with the 2027 class.

Per 247Sports, Tyson ranks as the No. 56 recruit in the 2027 class. With a 91 rating and four-star status, he is ranked as the 12th-best point guard in the class and the fourth-best recruit out of Indiana.

When looking at his composite rating of 0.9771, Tyson again ranks No. 56 nationally, while sticking as the No. 12 point guard in the class and the fourth-best recruit out of Indiana. Normally, you do not see the exact same rankings between the 247Sports rating and the composite score, but this is a pretty dead-even comparison. Thus, this is pretty much where Joshua Tyson currently sits on the recruiting trail.

If Michigan State and Tom Izzo are able to secure a commitment from Tyson, it will have to come after what could be a fantastic visit on Oct. 9. Though Michigan State has a plethora of recruits coming to visit throughout the next few months, it will be interesting to watch Tyson specifically, as he could potentially follow in the footsteps of other guards who have come through Point Guard University.

Tyson is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard from LaPorte, Indiana, currently playing at La Lumiere School. He is down to his final six teams: Xavier, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Michigan State and one remaining school in his final group.

Tyson is currently set to visit Xavier on July 21, Ohio State on Aug. 28, Virginia Tech on Sept. 5, Cincinnati on Sept. 19 and Michigan State on Oct. 9. If he is able to get through the gauntlet of those first four schools without committing, Michigan State will have a good chance to make a strong impression as the final scheduled visit.

The Spartans already have two point guards on the roster for the future, with Jervis looking like a potential leader and one of the next players to take over at the position for Michigan State. However, having Joshua Tyson on the back end would only be beneficial for Izzo and the Spartans.

There will be a ton of recruits over the next few months flowing through the doors of the Breslin Center to watch Michigan State, Tom Izzo and how the program works and handles itself. This seems to be the perfect year to have recruits in East Lansing, as expectations for this year's Michigan State team are as high as ever.
