The Spartans join a high-stakes battle for Georgia’s elite 6-foot-7 standout as Tom Izzo prioritizes high school talent over the portal to cement Michigan State's future dominance.
Another day, another offer as Tom Izzo continues extending scholarships to some of the top recruits in basketball, further building the foundation for the future in East Lansing.
One of the blue blood programs in college basketball, the Michigan State Spartans have seemingly been involved with nearly every top recruit in the 2027 class. By extending offers to some of the nation's best players, and with the pedigree and history Izzo has built in East Lansing, Michigan State is doing far more than simply getting its foot in the door.
The latest recruit to receive an offer from the Spartans is four-star small forward Asa Montgomery.
A standout from Georgia, Montgomery measures in at 6-foot-7 and 195 pounds. He plays at Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs, Georgia, and has quickly established himself as one of the premier players in the 2027 recruiting class.
Montgomery currently holds a four-star rating from 247Sports with a grade of 92. That ranking places him as the fifth-best player in the state of Georgia, the 10th-best small forward in the 2027 class, and the No. 41 overall player in the country.
His composite ranking, which combines evaluations from the major recruiting services, is even more impressive. Montgomery owns a composite score of 0.9896, ranking him as the No. 27 overall player in the nation, the seventh-best small forward in the class, and the third-best recruit coming out of Georgia.
Needless to say, he's one of the elite prospects in the 2027 class and would be a major addition to Michigan State's future roster.
Montgomery also ranks No. 27 on the SportsCenter Next Top 100 list. It's a list that featured four members of Michigan State's 2026 recruiting class, although the Spartans have yet to land a commitment from a player currently featured on this year's rankings.
Another player on that list, Jaxson Davis, the No. 51-ranked prospect in the SportsCenter Next Top 100, has already scheduled an official visit to Michigan State for Oct. 1. That visit was announced just weeks after Izzo extended his offer. Now, the Spartans will hope Montgomery follows a similar path by setting up an official visit of his own.
As of now, Montgomery has not scheduled any official visits, although that will likely change in the coming months. He has already collected offers from many of the nation's top programs, including North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, LSU, Louisville, and now Michigan State, as Tom Izzo and the Spartans have officially thrown their hat into the ring.
Staying ahead of the curve with elite high school prospects continues to be a priority for Izzo, even as transfer portal recruiting dominates much of today's college basketball landscape.
One thing about Izzo is he's never going to change. He continues to do things the right way, the old way, the Izzo way, or whatever you want to call it. While many programs rely almost exclusively on the transfer portal, Izzo continues to invest heavily in recruiting high school talent and developing players over time.
Michigan State's top-10 recruiting class in 2026 is proof that, even if the approach feels old-fashioned, it can still be incredibly effective.
Only time will tell how that 2026 class develops, who ultimately makes up the Spartans' 2027 recruiting class, and whether Asa Montgomery—the No. 27 overall player in the nation—will eventually decide to call East Lansing home.
