Five-star edge rusher Chaz Coleman has been medically disqualified from Tennessee's program, leaving the Vols dangerously thin at the position.
The Tennessee Volunteers are now extremely thin at edge rusher after the program announced that Penn State Nittany Lions transfer Chaz Coleman is no longer with the program due to being medically disqualified.
He will leave the team without playing a single down for the Vols after enrolling in January.
It ends a bit of a bizarre offseason that saw Coleman miss the second half of spring practice and later fail to report to summer workouts, with head coach Josh Heupel implying that “personal matters” were at play.
He was an initial huge get as a five-star transfer and the top edge rusher in the portal. Coleman followed former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to Tennessee.
Coleman posted 15 pressures as a freshman and was known to be a major matchup issue with great initial quickness and motor.
To read more about the unexpected departure and what it means for the Vols’ defense, here is the full story from Tennessee Roundtable writer Al Lesar.
It particularly hurts at the position that lost nearly every player in the room this offseason, with Joshua Josephs being drafted by the Washington Commanders, former recruit Jordan Ross transferring to the LSU Tigers, veteran Caleb Herring transferring to South Carolina, and three more contributors hitting the portal.
With the new spring portal rules, there’s also no second window to be able to find a replacement.
With the Vols’ tough schedule, they’ll need a pass rush as they’ll face quarterbacks Arch Manning, Byrum Brown, LaNorris Sellers, Marcel Reed, and Sam Leavitt on the slate this season.
