The Bill Belichick era at North Carolina has been called out by an insider.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will be entering this week, looking to pull off a massive upset over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

But over the last few weeks, the Tar Heels football program has been clouded by controversy. It all started with an investigation into the program that eventually led to the departures of general manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick.

Now that things have concluded, the program is trying to move forward, but it's been difficult. There seem to be a lot of people around the team who aren't happy that head coach Bill Belichick has remained.

Belichick is in his second year with the Tar Heels, and to this point, he has underperformed in his tenure. But the Tar Heels remain committed to the veteran head coach, with the team looking to continue building under his leadership.

But following the investigation and the future outlook, one former trustee called out the entire program. It seems like they were taking aim at Belichick.

“We had our five minutes of fame,” one former trustee said. “Now we’re stuck with this problem.”

Not only has North Carolina been in the news for all the wrong reasons, but the team has also continued to struggle on the field. While the Tar Heels are 2-1 to open the new season, they are coming off a tough loss to Clemson that saw them blow a 14-point lead.

Part of the problem has been the offense, with North Carolina ranking 102nd in the nation. This has been an issue for Belichick and company this year, and it's led to a ton of issues during games.

Belichick has been trying to adjust to the college game in the best way possible, but his time with North Carolina has been tough. Last season, North Carolina went 4-8, which was the lowest win total since 2019 for the program.

If Belichick wants to get off the hot seat, this team is going to need to start winning some games. But this could be a challenge, as the Tar Heels have matchups against multiple tough teams over the next few weeks.

This game against Notre Dame does offer the Tar Heels an opportunity, however. If North Carolina could find a way to take down the No. 3 team in the country, it would silence all doubters and critics, at least for a week.

North Carolina has a chance to earn its first win over a top-five opponent since the 2004 season. If Belichick can make this become a reality, his job status wouldn't be the talk of the program any longer.
