With staff vacancies mounting and a dismal debut season in the rearview, the legendary coach faces a brutal ultimatum in Chapel Hill as critics predict an imminent exit.
North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick and his staff are juggling extra duties with general manager Michael Lombardi on paid leave and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick on medical leave.
The Tar Heels have less than two weeks before its season gets underway against TCU in Dublin, Ireland, on August 29.
After going 4-8 in 2025, Bill Belichick is facing pressure to turn things around in Chapel Hill this season.
During a recent episode of "Josh Pate's College Football Show", the host named Belichick as the one college football coach on the hot seat this year. He thinks the "disaster" will soon be over.
“Now, one situation that's a lot clearer to me is North Carolina," Pate said. "Bill Belichick, significant disaster actually. It's a significant disaster. So this is soon to be pusher-broomed out, and then the North Carolina job opens up.
"Not much to say here. It's a move that never should have happened. It's a joke of a coaching search and the way it was handled.”
One way or the other, the disaster part will be over. Belichick can turn things around by winning this season. If he doesn't, the school can cut bait and look for a brighter chapter.
Sumrall reminded his audience that UNC made a mistake not hiring Jon Sumrall before the 2025 season.
“You very well could have had Jon Sumrall there, who could very well be entering year two with Darien Mensah as his starting quarterback, who instead is at Miami right now," Pate said. But you know what, if you can start the 33rd NFL team, why would you want to go with Sumrall and Mensah?
"Anyway, I think mistakes were made, mistakes have been realized. There's not much more to say here. There's probably going to be a change in Chapel Hill."
North Carolina hired a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach to replace Mack Brown. It was a gamble for the program, and didn't work out in Year 1.
That doesn't mean Belichick has to end his tenure in failure at North Carolina. Belichick performed miracles in the NFL with subpar rosters, but he's facing an uphill battle with a challenging schedule this fall.
