With a $10 million salary and a rebuilt roster at North Carolina, the pressure is on. Bill Belichick One misstep against these three opponents could prematurely end the legend’s tenure in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina: 3 Can't Lose Games Bill Belichick Can't Afford to LoseMore Videos

At $10 million per season, North Carolina expects Bill Belichick to do much more than finish 4-8 like he did in 2025.

Otherwise, what was the point in parting ways with legendary coach Mack Brown?

UNC's roster was to blame for most of the issues last season. Belichick added better players in the transfer portal this offseason, and the team should be much more competitive in the ACC, though not likely a championship contender.

Given the state of the program entering this fall, a loss or two to one of the three teams could seriously derail the season and Belichick's tenure at UNC.

ETSU at North Carolina (Sept. 12)

This one is a gimme at home against an FCS school. The Tar Heels will play TCU in its opener the week before, and must have a win here before taking on Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh in its next three games.

A loss to an FCS school would bring the program to an embarrassing level. Belichick could survive a losing season where the team couldn't compete against better rosters in the Power 4. A loss to ETSU would surely signal the start of the end of Belichick's career.

Syracuse at North Carolina (Oct. 24)

Until North Carolina is good enough to knock off the Clemson's and Miami's of the ACC, Belichick must not give an inch to the cellar dwellers of the conference. Syracuse should be better with quarterback Steve Angeli healthy again, but UNC needs to be better than the Orange at home.

Syracuse appears to be the easiest ACC team on UNC's schedule for this fall. It's a game North Carolina not only needs to win but should do so in convincing fashion.

NC State at North Carolina (Nov. 28)

The rivalry game between NC State and UNC could have bowl implications for two head coaches who need to make the postseason, if not more in 2026.

The Wolfpack, under head coach Dave Doeren, blew out the Tar Heels 42-19 last season.

Belichick needs to beat a rival this season, and a home game against the Wolfpack needs to be that game, or questions will be asked as the team heads into December.
