After a dismal debut, Bill Belichick faces a high-stakes gauntlet. Crucial matchups against Clemson, Notre Dame, and Duke will determine if the Tar Heels can secure a bowl.

The North Carolina have the opportunity to be the ACC's most improved college football team this fall.

It's been widely discussed that head coach Bill Belichick's first season with the program ended in failure with a 4-8 record. What's been less discussed is that chatter from coaches around that the sport is that it was more of a talent problem than coaching problem. Belichick was praised for his adjustments.

With increased focus on recruiting and the transfer portal, the Tar Heels should be better this season, but a tough schedule makes a bowl game less than certain.

Here are the three games that will define the 2026 campaign for UNC.

1: UNC at Clemson (Sept 19)

The ACC opened for the Tar Heels is against an opponent that had its own disappointing record in 2025. Belichick and Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney were the target of numerous disparaging headlines last fall.

The Tigers appear to be having a hard time replacing the nine players that left for the 2026 NFL Draft. This is a winnable game for UNC, and it can happen if Belichick is able to outsmart Swinney.

Belichick took advantage of rookie quarterbacks during his time in the NFL. With Tait Reynolds or Christopher Vizzina under center this year, UNC should have the upper hand there.

North Carolina can take momentum into its next important game with an upset of the Tigers.

Notre Dame at North Carolina (Oct. 3)

The schedule is brutal for or UNC between Sept. 19 and Oct. 10, when the Tar Heels travel to play Pitt. Fortunately for Belichick, he'll have a bye week to prepare for a home game with Notre Dame in Chapel Hill.

The reason why this game is pivotal is because of who they play before. If UNC loses to Clemson, a loss to the Irish would put the program at 2-2 with Pitt, Miami, and Louisville still on the schedule amid rivalry games against NC State and Duke.

It feels like UNC will need to beat either Clemson or Notre Dame to make a bowl game, and an upset of the Irish would be the signature victory Belichick needs to silence the doubters.

North Carolina at Duke (Sept. 17)

Duke struggled early last season before making a furious run and winning the ACC championship. The Blue Devils lost quarterback Darian Mensah to Miami in the transfer portal.

No one knows what this Duke team will look like this fall. It could compete for another ACC championship. It might miss a bowl game.

UNC needs to win this rivalry game to stay in the hunt for a bowl game and show Belichick is putting the program on the right track. This is a more than winnable game for the Tar Heels, and will tell us a lot about where Belichick's program is at.
