Rival coaches fear a schematic masterclass as the legendary coach pairs his defensive genius with Bobby Petrino’s offense to transform the Tar Heels into ACC spoilers.
Bill Belichick would like to write off the 2025 season as a mulligan during his first year as a college head coach at North Carolina.
Last season was the first time Belichick had coached at the college level at any capacity. He noted that there were numerous problems with the roster he had last season, and believes the players on this year's team will be much better than the unit that went 4-8.
Belichick put in the work recruiting this offseason, though UNC has a large gap in talent to feel between them and Miami, the preseason favorite to win the ACC.
Athlon recently quoted an anonymous ACC coach who seems to have a little bit of fear about what Belichick and his staff can do on game days, believing the staff makes adjustments during the week, though they lacked the players to compete in the conference last season.
“Schematically, it felt like a Bill Belichick defense," the coach said. "They do a really good job of using the people they have, mixing up who the rushers are, looking at who you are and how they want to match up to you.
"Week to week, they actually make better adjustments than a lot of people. They just didn’t have the players. And they were better on defense than on offense.”
The coach believes UNC made a serious upgrade by moving on from offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and hiring Bobby Petrino.
“They were pretty bad on offense, but the guy they hired, Bobby Petrino, is phenomenal," the coach said. He’s as good of a coach as there is with offense in college football. I can’t imagine how that dynamic (with Belichick) is gonna go, though.”
The coach did have some criticism for Belichick and the staff, suggesting UNC did not bring in the "right guys" to play this fall.
“I don’t think there’s a sense that they’ve improved their evaluation abilities," the coach said.
Without the right talent, there is only so much Belichick and his staff can do to win games. One of the most important jobs a coach has in college is to nail the recruiting part down.
In the NFL, scheme can work wonders. If Belichick can't become an elite recruiter, UNC has no chance to compete for the ACC.
