Anonymous rivals and analysts question if the legendary coach Bill Belichick of North Carolina misjudged the conference's talent gap, warning that a top-ranked recruiting class may not bridge the immediate competitive divide.

Last year, The Athletic reported that Group of 6 coaches noted that players they were trying to recruit for the 2025 season were being drawn to North Carolina under Bill Belichick.

The implications were clear: UNC put together a roster that wasn't ready to compete with its peers in the ACC. A 4-8 overall record and a 2-6 record in the ACC appeared to prove those coaches correct.

"What I think they miscalculated is with the way they were taking (players) in the portal and paying dudes,” the anonymous head coach told The Athletic. “It made me wonder, did they actually understand the landscape they were in? Did they understand that they’re in the ACC, not like Conference USA or the Sun Belt?

"Like, we got beat by North Carolina on a bunch of kids. I was like, why the f— is North Carolina beating us on kids? When I keep running up against the same P4s over and over again in recruiting, I’m like, all right, they’re gonna suck.”

To Belichick's credit, UNC brought in 61 total players in the offseason and ranked No. 22 in recruiting for 2026, per 247 Sports. The Tar Heels have 12 four-star athletes in the 2026 class.

Eric Mac Lain of the ACC Network is skeptical Belichick did enough in the offseason to contend in the conference, arguing the roster is a long way from contending for a championship.

“I don’t think I’m confident in that roster,” Mac Lain said, via a transcription from On3. “I don’t know if I’m confident with that they have retooled and rebuilt. I think they’re still yearning for that… I think that roster is still a ways away.”

It's a fair assessment. UNC will be underdogs in four of its first five games against TCU, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pitt.

Another slow start could doom Belichick's tenure with the Tar Heels, as future recruits might balk at joining a program with a head coach that would appear well past his prime.

It's imperative that Belichick develops his roster quickly during training camp and wins a couple of games it shouldn't early in the regular season.
