Facing a $50 million investment and a daunting schedule, six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick faces intense scrutiny as analysts predict another disastrous, bowl-free season for North Carolina.

Is Bill Belichick on the hot seat at North Carolina?

UNC invested heavily in their football program after deciding to part with Mack Brown after a 6-6 season in 2024. The Tar Heels were hoping for greater things than Brown brought the program in his second tenure.

North Carolina hired Bill Belichick with the hope he could convince recruits that he could build a 33rd team in Chapel Hill, which would serve as a pipeline to league teams.

Belichick's services aren't cheap, as the Tar Heels signed him to a five-year contract worth $50 million. That made it all the more painful when the program went 4-8 in 2024, losing games to rivals Duke and NC State.

North Carolina has a better roster this season than they had in 2025, but the schedule is daunting for Belichick. UNC will play Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh by Oct. 10. They will have to play Miami and Louisville later in the schedule in addition to Duke and NC State.

Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports had a harsh bowl prediction for the Tar Heels, expecting them to miss the postseason for the second year in a row.

Given UNC's schedule and the production they had in 2025, that isn't a bad prediction at all by Lassan.

With that being said, missing a bowl game would be disastrous for Belichick and North Carolina. The Tar Heels are paying Belichick too much money for him not to make a postseason.

Would UNC look to fire Belichick if he misses the postseason?

It would depend on how willing the boosters are to pay the buyout. Remember, the Tar Heels just fired Hubert Davis and brought in former NBA head coach Michael Malone to replace him.

However, another losing season for North Carolina would certainly hurt Belichick in recruiting for the 2027 campaign. Keeping the six-time Super Bowl champion well past his prime could hurt the program for years to come.

Belichick could avoid the discussion altogether by finding a way to win six games. ETSU, Syracuse, and UConn should be wins for the Tar Heels.

They need to pull off an upset against Clemson, Notre Dame, or Pitt and win some tough games against TCU, Duke, NC State, Virginia, or Louisville.
