Have the North Carolina Tar Heels locked up their spot in the upcoming NCAA Tournament?

With less than a handful of games left in the 2025-26 college basketball regular season, the North Carolina Tar Heels and head coach Hubert Davis are slowly beginning to prepare for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Despite star forward Caleb Wilson being held out of the past couple of games for the Tar Heels due to a lingering hand injury, North Carolina has managed to win their last two games against the Syracuse Orangemen and the Louisville Cardinals. Senior guard Seth Trimble continues to play a key role on offense without Wilson, as he finished the most recent contest against the Cardinals with 30 points.

Now, with all eyes on the NCAA Tournament, the Tar Heels are eager to find out their seeding in the upcoming tournament.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Tar Heels remain as a No. 6 seed in ESPN Joe Lunardi’s “Bracketology,” after two major victories. In his projection, Lunardi also has North Carolina located in the Midwest region, with a potential first-round matchup against the winner of TCU and New Mexico.

North Carolina’s Future Outlook

This year, the Tar Heels have faced tons of adversity, including Wilson and center Henri Veesaar’s injuries throughout the course of the regular season. Still, North Carolina has maintained a 22-6 overall record, as well as a 10-5 record in ACC play this year.

Luckily for the program, the Tar Heels kicked off the month of February with a huge victory over the Duke Blue Devils at home, 71-68. Wilson finished the contest with 23 points, while Trimble sealed the victory with a three-pointer at the buzzer. The late-season victory gave North Carolina a huge Quad 1 victory, helping their resume before selection Sunday.

However, in order to truly make a run in this year’s NCAA Tournament, it’s clear that the Tar Heels must fix some issues ahead of March.

Obviously, the status of Wilson will be the most important factor in the team’s success this postseason, as the highly-regarded forward leads the team in points this season (19.8 points per game). In addition to remaining healthy, the Tar Heels also must do a better job at the free-throw line, as the team has shot 51 percent from the line over the past two games.
