North Carolina Tar Heel stars pull back the curtain on life under the legendary coach Bill Belichick, revealing a complex balance of high-stakes intensity, unexpected humor, and rigid locker room standards.
Does Bill Belichick have command of the North Carolina Tar Heels' locker room?
UNC took a hit last season when they finished 4-8 overall and 2-6 in ACC play. The season was filled with tons of drama, including an assistant coach being suspended and a player retiring from the team before the end of the season.
During ACC Football Kickoff on Friday, UNC wide receiver Jordan Shipp argued that Belichick isn't as mean as he can seem.
“Coach Belichick is not what the media makes him seem like he is,” Ship said, via a transcription from On3. “Of course he’s a simple guy. He eats, breathes, sleeps football, of course.
"But even in some of the meetings he cracks a joke here and there. He can light up a room, even though certain people make it seem like he’s the big, mean guy. Of course when he means business there’s a time and place for everything, of course.”
Former North Carolina quarterback Gio Lopez and his family had a different take on Belichick and his staff, suggesting he didn't have fun playing football for the program before transferring to Wake Forest this offseason.
Edge Melkart Abou Jaoude noted that Belichick can have a temper, but that's his way of coaching players to be better on the field and play to their standard.
“He holds everyone to the highest standard, but he got his unique way of doing it,” Jaoude said. “Sometimes he’ll be angry at you, sometimes he’s just cracking jokes at you.
"He tries to bring the best out of you, whether it’s making fun of you and that just fires you up and you want to be better or whether he’s actually coaching you and telling you what you need to work on.”
In the end, what matters to the players in the locker room and Belichick is if the staff can develop the talent on the field to compete in win games during the fall. Players won't appreciate Belichick's tactics if he doesn't help them prepare for the NFL or compete for a meaningful win in the postseason.
