After a disastrous four-win debut at North Carolina, legendary coach Bill Belichick faces a brutal schedule and scathing criticism as analysts question his ability to adapt to college.

North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick faces some heavy pressure in Year 2 after going just 4-8 in his first season in Chapel Hill.

Belichick, who had never before coached at the college level in any capacity before 2025, had a strong learning curve in his first season with the Tar Heels. UNC didn't field a roster worthy of competing in the ACC, and Belichick paid for it.

Whether North Carolina can return to a bowl game this season remains to be seen. UNC's schedule is brutal, with TCU, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh on the schedule before Oct. 11.

During an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" on Friday, college football analyst Paul Finebaum suggested Belichick’s best move was to retire before he further embarrasses himself.

“He chose the wrong place,” Finebaum said of North Carolina, via a transcription from On3. “He has tried to use the magic of yesteryear, and it simply hasn’t worked. I’ll break it to everyone who is curious how many games they’re going to win this year. Their over-and-under in Vegas is 4.5.

"Five wins would be considered a success, and that would mean another embarrassment... He won’t get fired. But he should seriously consider retirement.”

Finebaum had harsh words to describe Belichick's tenure with UNC, calling it "embarrassing" and "pathetic."

“I think his college future,” Finebaum said. “No one’s taking away his six Super Bowls, but ending like he is going to end is really embarrassing and sad and in many ways pathetic, because this didn’t have to happen.

"He only took this job because he was bitter that he couldn’t get an NFL job.”

Belichick tried to find an NFL job after the 2023 season, interviewing with the Atlanta Falcons. Nothing came of it, and he wasn't seriously considered for another head coaching job in the league for the 2025 season.

UNC was available, and he took the job, hoping to transform North Carolina into the 33rd team. As of now, the Tar Heels are closer to a Group of 6 program than the 33rd team.

Still, Belichick could change the narrative with a couple of upset wins this fall.
