UNC's looming decision on Hubert Davis faces unexpected delays, complicating a potentially costly coaching change after early tournament exit.
Per multiple reports, North Carolina is expected to make its decision on the future of Hubert Davis in the coming days.
Davis was under fire after his team blew a 19-point lead against No. 11 seed VCU on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The loss reflected poorly on Davis, even if the team was shorthanded without Caleb Wilson.
Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, UNC is not expected to label any parting of the ways with Davis as a firing. Davis is a former player, assistant and head coach for the program.
The program would have a few things to sort out if they moved on from Davis. The head coach has a $5.3 million buyout. The team would also want to make sure that they could land a proven winner to replace him.
In addition to those complications, the school had another worry on Sunday.
Per Thamel, the school wanted to wait until after North Carolina's women's basketball team took on No. 5 seed Maryland on Sunday. The Lady Tar Heels knocked off the Terrapins 74-66 to advance to the Sweet 16.
With that contest out of the way, the school can focus on how to deal with the men's basketball program after being knocked out of March Madness in the first round for a second season in a row.
Davis had a rather bizarre postgame news conference after the loss to VCU, sidestepping tough questions about why he chose to play a certain lineup and how he felt about losing in the first round again.
Davis put the focus on how his guys felt after losing a heartbreaking game in overtime.
"Just really sad that we're not continuing to play and to move forward because I have loved and enjoyed this team," Davis said.
"I enjoy and love all of them, but I've just really enjoyed coaching this team. I really wanted this group and these kids to experience more. But other than that, I'm just thinking about these guys and the rest of the guys that are in the locker room."
It's likely the last time that Davis was in the locker room as a head coach.
The Tar Heels have watched as rival Duke made the tournament as a No. 1 overall seed and has since made the Sweet 16.
