Should Bill Belichick stay with the North Carolina Tar Heels moving forward?
The North Carolina Tar Heels fought until the very end against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this weekend, with the team falling just short of the win at home.
After a long bye week for North Carolina, the team came out with a lot of fight against the No. 3 team in the nation. This group looked prepared from the opening jump, but in the end, the talent gap was too much to overcome.
However, the performance against the Fighting Irish was promising, and the team can take a lot from the loss. Head coach Bill Belichick had his guys ready to go, and a lot can be said from that.
But the question still remains whether Belichick should remain the head coach of this program after another loss. North Carolina has some tough decisions to make as the season moves on, but the veteran coach can save himself in the process.
The Belichick era hasn't gone to plan so far, and the program is coming off an investigation that led to the departures of general manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick.
Under Belichick, the Tar Heels have gone 6-10, which isn't going to get the job done in the ACC. North Carolina went 4-8 a year ago, which was the lowest number of wins for the program since 2019.
So far this year, the team is 2-2 on the season, despite starting the year with two straight wins. The last two games have been disappointing for the Tar Heels, and more questions continue to raise up around the program.
This game against the Fighting Irish could get Belichick some extra points, but it likely won't save him. Belichick is going to have to earn his keep for the rest of the way, getting this team to a winning record.
If he can't, the veteran coach could be looking for a new job sooner rather than later. Belichick's tenure in college just hasn't been great, and the Tar Heels may decide enough is enough.
For now, Belichick's job with the program is safe, but the clock is ticking on his time with the Tar Heels. Many people around the team have wanted him gone following the investigation, and if this team can't turn things around this season, it could spell the end for him.
Next up for the Tar Heels will be a road game against the Pittsburgh Panthers, and this will be a crucial contest for the team. If North Carolina can get the win, it could at least silence some of the outside noise this season.
