The ESPN analyst unleashed a scathing critique of the North Carolina Tar Heels’ gamble, labeling the legendary coach a "bully" destined for a catastrophic failure in Chapel Hill.
Not many around the sport of college football believe Bill Belichick can pull the rabbit out of the hat with North Carolina.
After a 4-8 season in 2025, Belichick needs to show progress with an improved roster despite facing a tougher schedule this fall.
During an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" on Tuesday, Paul Finebaum tore into the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach of the New England Patriots, calling Belichick a "bully" and predicting his career would end "in flames."
“I’m not pulling for Bill Belichick,” Finebaum said. “He’s a grouch. He’s a bully, and his career in college is about to go down in flames.”
North Carolina is dealing with several unfortunate circumstances during training camp. General manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on medical leave.
Finebaum is predicting North Carolina will lose to TCU on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland. He's not sure Bill Belichick will keep his job through the end of the season.
Finebaum thought Belichick was shortsighted in choosing to resurrect his career with the Tar Heels after failing to land another coaching job in the league. Finebaum threw more gasoline on the fire, questioning how much Belichick had to do with the Patriots winning six Super Bowls.
“He couldn’t accept that nobody in the NFL wanted him anymore,” Finebaum said. “And because he is Bill Belichick, and he knows more than anybody, even though we all now know that it was Tom Brady who led him to all those Super Bowl championships.
"Brady proved that the second he got out of there.”
Finebaum claimed Belichick is "one of the worst college football coaches" that he's ever witnessed.
Josh Pate isn't sure Belichick will make it through the end of the season, believing a firing could happen sooner rather than later.
Belichick is an easy target this offseason. The narrative will not change unless the Tar Heels start winning games.
The contest on Saturday against the Horned Frogs would be a good start for North Carolina to make a turnaround. A loss could be dangerous.
