A historic winning streak shattered as the top-ranked Hurricanes escaped Kenan Stadium, handing the defensive mastermind a heartbreaking defeat despite an explosive, 35-point Tar Heel offensive performance.
The North Carolina Tar Heels gave it their best shot, but the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes proved too strong, as head coach Bill Belichick's squad lost 38-35 in front of a home crowd of 44,257 at Kenan Stadium on Saturday night.
UNC and Miami went back and forth all night. The game came down to a pair of questionable penalties on an onside kick attempt by North Carolina. The Tar Heels recovered the first two attempts but were flagged. Miami recovered the third and ran out the clock.
Belichick's defense allowed Miami to gain 416 yards in total offense. The 38 points the Hurricanes scored were about 11 points fewer than they averaged per game coming into Saturday night's contest.
But the defense couldn't do enough to support UNC's offense, which had a great night against Miami.
Per ESPN Insights, Saturday's game was the first time since Belichick has been a head coach at the NFL or college level that his team scored 35 points and lost a game. Belichick had previously been 103-0 when his teams put up 35 points.
UNC quarterback Billy Edwards went 28 of 44 passing for 341 yards and four touchdowns. He did have a critical lost fumble in the fourth quarter that allowed Miami to extend its lead to 10 points.
While the passing game was electric for UNC, the running game struggled. The Tar Heels gained 66 rushing yards on 30 carries.
The loss dropped North Carolina to 4-4. The Tar Heels have lost in back-to-back weeks.
UNC is showing a lot of fight under Belichick, but the team's record isn't where it needs to be under the legendary head coach.
North Carolina will enter November needing two wins to become bowl eligible. The Tar Heels will play UConn on the road next week. They'll finish their season against Louisville, Virginia, and NC State.
Those are all winnable games for Belichick and the Tar Heels.
Before the loss to Syracuse, UNC had a 4-2 record and looked poised to have a winning season. That's in doubt after the loss at home to Miami.
While North Carolina played well against the No. 1 team in the country, the Tar Heels made a few mistakes, and that cost them a chance to pull off the upset on Halloween.
Next week's contest against the Huskies will be telling about how much buy-in the team has after another disappointing loss
