As investigators grill staff and players following Michael Lombardi’s resignation, the Tar Heels face a massive financial crossroads while struggling to stabilize the program under scrutiny.

North Carolina breathed a sigh of relief by earning a 15-10 win over TCU in its season opener in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug. 29.

The Tar Heels had a bye in Week 1 and will next host East Tennessee State on Saturday. UNC should be 2-0 before traveling to play Clemson in Week 3.

The Tar Heels needed to gain some early momentum this season after finishing 4-8 in 2025. Amid negative headlines surrounding Bill Belichick's first season with the team, UNC opened an investigation into some other unsavory issues in the program.

General manager Michael Lombardi resigned last week after being on paid administrative leave in late July.

Per Pete Nakos of On3, coaches on Belichick's staff, former staffers, players and parents have been interviewed recently as part of UNC's investigation. Belichick's buyout stands at approximately $13.3 million.

On Monday, Belichick told reporters that UNC officials have been supportive. He's open to getting feedback for the program.

"They've been very supportive, a great working relationship with those people," he said, via ESPN. "In the end, look, we want to run the program in the very best way. And if there's things we need to do to correct it, then we'll obviously do them."

With negative headlines surrounding the Tar Heels, all Belichick can do is try to win games this season.

UNC should go to 2-0 after playing ETSU this weekend. The next two contests are a little more tricky. The Tar Heels will travel to play Clemson on Sept. 19, but the Tigers did not look like a competent team against LSU on Saturday. That's a game UNC could very well win.

No. 3 Notre Dame will be much tougher when UNC hosts the Fighting Irish on Oct. 3. So really, Belichick's best bid here is to score a win over a reeling Clemson program the week before, and go 3-1 before playing Pitt and Duke in October.

Given the optics surrounding the program, Belichick can't afford to miss out on a bowl game, and his team might have to make a run in the ACC to keep the pressure down.
