Here's what you need to know about tonight's rivalry game.

Northwestern is having a difficult season. Sitting at 8-8, and 0-5 in Big Ten play so far, postseason hopes are evaporating. That's the unfortunate reality for Wildcat fans, but it's also true that there's a lot more basketball to be played the season.

The next 15 games will be a reminder of what makes college basketball so great. Sure, making NCAA Tournaments is the goal. But the beauty of college sports is that in every game fans have every incentive to root as hard as possible for their team. There's no draft picks. There's no empty words from coaches about "finishing strong" and "not giving up."

Chris Collins doesn't want to lose more games. Nick Martinelli sure as heck doesn't -- he's made that much clear. And there's perhaps no game more important each year than the home matchup vs. Illinois.

Tonight at 7:30 p.m. is that game. The Illini are the far more talented roster, ranked No. 13 in the nation right now. They have the momentum. The odds are squarely in their favor.

Keaton Wagler will be a problem. Kylan Boswell is always dangerous. Not to mention Andrej Stojakovic and David Mirkovic. The Illini, as they always do, have a lot of horses, and the Wildcats might struggle to keep up.

Martinelli will have to come to play, but that's a given. Northwestern will also need to attack the boards harder than it has all season and play the best defense of its season as well. It's a tall task.

But Northwestern has one thing going for it: a sellout crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Will some of the fans be in orange? Surely. But Northwestern and Illinois have had quite a few recent battles in this venue with these fans in attendance. The Wildcats have found themselves on the winning end more than once -- never favored heading in, mind you.

Northwestern fans should be prepared for a battle. The team is 0-5, and there's no escaping that fact. This isn't a Boo Buie-led squad. But this team does have Big Ten leading scorer Nick Martinelli, and it does have Chris Collins. Never count out Collins in a sold out Welsh. That's a mistake too many have made on too many occasions.

Here's everything you need to know about the game tonight. Any result you can dream up (save for a 30-point Wildcat win) is probably possible, even if a loss feels probable.
