Northwestern faces more injury concerns ahead of Rutgers, with Luke Dehnicke ruled out and Robert Fitzgerald and Brendan Flakes listed as doubtful.
Northwestern football continues to find ways to win, but the Wildcats are dealing with another frustrating setback as injuries continue to pile up.
Ahead of Saturday’s home matchup against Rutgers, Northwestern released its first injury report of the week, and the news is far from encouraging.
Tight end Luke Dehnicke and defensive back Josh Fussell have been ruled out, while standout safety Robert Fitzgerald and defensive lineman Brendan Flakes are both listed as doubtful.
The Wildcats also have linebackers Amare Jordan and defensive lineman Migo Jackson listed as questionable, adding even more uncertainty to an already depleted roster.
For a Northwestern team sitting at 5-1 and hoping to continue its impressive start, the growing injury list is becoming a serious concern.
Key Injuries Continue to Pile Up
Perhaps one of the most frustrating developments is the continued absence of Dehnicke.
The talented tight end has been one of quarterback Aidan Chiles’ most reliable targets this season, including his breakout performance against Indiana, when he recorded seven receptions for 140 yards.
However, Dehnicke has been sidelined since that matchup and is now set to miss another game.

Honig has responded well to those opportunities, but there is no question that having Dehnicke available would provide another valuable weapon for Chiles.
On the defensive side, Fitzgerald’s doubtful designation is another major concern.
The recently named midseason All-American has been one of Northwestern’s most important defensive players, providing leadership, experience and consistent production in the secondary.
Fitzgerald missed last week’s victory over Michigan State, and the Wildcats experienced some defensive struggles without him.
Northwestern ultimately escaped East Lansing with a 24-21 victory, but the absence of its defensive leader was certainly noticeable.
And now, Flakes could be joining him on the sidelines.
The defensive lineman played a major role in Saturday’s victory, blocking a crucial Michigan State field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter that helped set up Northwestern’s game-winning drive.
That play was one of the defining moments of the afternoon, making his doubtful designation particularly disappointing.
Losing two important defensive contributors would present another difficult challenge for Braun’s team.
Northwestern Continues to Battle Through Adversity
Despite the injuries, one thing Northwestern deserves credit for is its ability to keep winning.
The Wildcats have dealt with significant absences throughout the season, including offensive lineman Ezomo Oratokhai, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier this year.
Yet the team has continued to demonstrate resilience, with different players stepping up when their opportunities arrive.
That speaks to the culture Braun has established within the program. However, there is only so much a team can overcome before the injuries begin to take a toll.
Northwestern has already shown it can compete with strong opponents, but remaining healthy will be essential as the schedule becomes increasingly difficult.
Following Saturday’s matchup against Rutgers, the Wildcats face a challenging stretch that includes Oregon, Iowa and Ohio State.
Those are exactly the types of games where Northwestern will need as many of its key contributors available as possible.
And while the Wildcats should still feel confident heading into Saturday, the continued absences of Dehnicke and Fussell, along with the uncertain availability of Fitzgerald and Flakes, are concerning developments.
Northwestern has done an impressive job navigating adversity throughout its 5-1 start.
But as the Wildcats continue pushing toward bigger goals, getting healthy might be just as important as anything happening on the field.
For now, the focus remains on Rutgers, but these injuries will be something worth monitoring closely over the coming weeks.
