The 'Cats have been aggressive in this cycle.
It's a beautiful weekend in Evanston. Spring has officially sprung -- it's light out until late; the beaches are open; and the harsh wind has turned into a nice cool breeze. It's the perfect environment to host potential 2027 football recruits, and the Wildcats are very much taking advantage.
Northwestern is hosting a large group of players this weekend on campus for official visits. Nobody has officially committed yet, but the program tends to tease commitments on its X page, and it has already been doing that. Expect to see official news in the coming days.
This is a big weekend for the Wildcats. Head coach David Braun has a lot of outstanding offers out there, as it feels like his program makes one every day and only currently has seven commits in the class.
Those commits include: OT Josiah Wallace, TE Wyatt Frey, OG Cade Reikowski, DL Tyler Frederick, LB Jack Frassetto, TE Brady Johnson and QB R.J. Day. Each member of Northwestern's 2027 class so far is currently ranked at a three-star, and the class itself is good enough for No. 51 in the country, according to 247Sports.
This weekend, the 'Cats had uncommitted players like edge rusher Jared Zames and wideout Darnell Jackson Jr.. Most of these players are also three-star recruits, and it speaks to a strategy Northwestern seems to be deploying -- take a lot of shots, and see what sticks.
The 'Cats are making a ton of offers, especially to developmental positions of strength. Northwestern knows it's very capable of continuously revamping its offensive and defensive fronts through recruitment and development. So, it's doing that, and is in turn making most of its offers to players at those positions.
If Northwestern can maintain its reputation as a good place for linemen, it will always hold a comparative advantage in recruiting those players over other similar-level teams. Additionally, it will help them free up more money to address the positions it hasn't historically developed well out of high school through the transfer portal -- wide receiver and quarterback, to name a few.
Ultimately, though, for this strategy to work the Wildcats need to start seeing more of these offers turn into commitments, and that's what this weekend is all about. If the coaching staff can't sell Evanston on a weekend like this one -- in addition to the new Ryan Field and a revamped coaching staff -- then it probably had no chance with the player anyway.
Early this week, we'll learn which players were swayed by their visit to make their decision. The 'Cats don't have to get all of them, but growing their 2027 class and rising in the rankings would be helpful.
