Northwestern flipped another recruit yesterday, officially receiving a commitment from three-star linebacker Max Mohring. Previously, the 2026 recruit was committed to Kentucky.

The Wildcats are on a hot stretch recruiting. They recently flipped offensive lineman Jack Fuchs, who was committed to Penn State. He became David Braun's highest ranked recruit before wide receiver commit Jaden McDuffie stole the crown via a Rivals rating adjustment that made him a four-star.

Now, Mohring enters the fold at a position of need. The 'Cats' defense is always better when it's strong up the middle, and they've had some solid linebacker play as of late. In order to maintain the identity this program is building with Braun, that position needs to stay a strength.

According to 247Sports, Mohring is the No. 83 linebacker in his class and the No. 28 player from his home state of Pennsylvania. Rivals disagrees just a little, ranking him as the No. 120 linebacker and the No. 31 player from PA. Both sites agree on a three-star rating.

The 'Cats were once viewed as an underdog in his recruiting cycle -- Rivals predicted he'd either end up at Kentucky or UCF. Other offers included Brown, Colgate and Navy, among others, according to 247.

When Northwestern flipped Fuchs, it made a little more sense than this one does. The Nittany Lions just fired their head coach, a coach who was probably a large reason why Fuchs committed to the program in the first place. It was still a huge win to flip a player from a premier program like Penn State, but it was understandable that some recruits would jump ship.

Mohring is a different scenario. The other Wildcats are also 5-5 this season over in the SEC, but Mohring still decided the opportunity in Evanston was one he couldn't pass up.

This is a fantastic sign as Braun continues to build this roster in hopes of one day constructing a team that competes to make postseason play more meaningful than a random bowl. If the 'Cats can out recruit other power conference programs instead of fighting to stay close, that will open a lot of doors.

Mohring's commitment is another sign that things are going better in that arena as Braun gains more experience as a head coach and the university continues to invest in athletics.
