Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles has accounted for 21 touchdowns through seven games. Could his consistency and dual-threat ability put him in the Heisman Trophy conversation?

When discussing the Heisman Trophy race, Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles deserves to be part of the conversation. While he might not be among the first names mentioned nationally, his performance through the first seven games of the season has made a strong case for why he should receive more recognition.

Chiles has done nearly everything right this season, especially considering the level of competition Northwestern faces in the Big Ten.

He has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the conference, showing improvements in his accuracy, decision-making and ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground.

Through seven games, Chiles has completed 71.3% of his passes for 1,617 yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing just one interception. He has also added 181 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, bringing his total to 21 touchdowns on the season.

Those numbers demonstrate how much he contributes to Northwestern’s offense and how difficult he can be to defend.

One of the most impressive parts of Chiles’ season has been his accuracy and patience in the pocket. He is completing passes at a high rate while showing the ability to work through his progressions and find the right target rather than forcing throws.

His calmness under pressure has also stood out. Even when Northwestern faces difficult situations, Chiles has shown the poise to stay composed, make adjustments and give his team opportunities to make plays.

His ability to use his legs makes him even more dangerous. Chiles is not limited to making plays from the pocket. When passing opportunities are not available, he can escape pressure, extend plays and pick up important yards himself. His nine rushing touchdowns are proof of how valuable that ability has been, especially in the red zone.

His performance against Rutgers was another example of what makes him such an exciting quarterback. Chiles completed 19 of 25 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns while adding 83 rushing yards and two more scores.

He accounted for five touchdowns in Northwestern’s 42-14 victory and earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. It was another performance that showed his ability to impact the game in multiple ways.

Of course, being a Heisman Trophy candidate is about more than individual statistics. Team success, strength of schedule and performances in high-profile matchups all play a role. That is where Chiles has an important opportunity ahead of him.

Northwestern still has challenging opponents on its schedule, beginning with Saturday’s road matchup against Oregon.

If Chiles can continue producing against quality competition, lead the Wildcats to important victories and maintain his consistency, his national recognition could grow quickly.

The Big Ten is one of the toughest conferences in college football, and continuing to perform at this level against its top teams would only strengthen his case.

Chiles might not be a leading Heisman contender just yet, but that does not mean he should be left out of the discussion. He has shown accuracy, patience, confidence, leadership and the ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs. Most importantly, he has consistently given Northwestern a chance to win.

If he can carry that level of play into the toughest stretch of the Wildcats’ schedule, I believe Chiles can gradually work his way into the national Heisman conversation. For now, he deserves recognition as one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the Big Ten.
