Despite the Buckeyes' massive win over Kent State, they fell another spot in the most recent AP Poll.
Ohio State's 59-3 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes didn't move any of the AP Poll voters as Ohio State fell in this week's rankings.
The Buckeyes played week two as the No. 6-ranked team in the country, and entering week three, they are now the No. 7 team in the country. Now, two things can be true in this specific scenario: the Buckeyes shouldn't be dropping for losing on the road to the No. 1 team in the country, and this poll doesn't matter at this point in the season.
The Buckeyes' fall from the No. 1 team in the country is probably as low as it will go at spot No. 7. They are sandwiched between the Miami Hurricanes and the Alabama Crimson Tide, which are two of the bottom-ranked undefeated teams at the top of the charts.
Texas is the obvious No. 1 team with this win over the Buckeyes and will likely stay there until the Georgia Bulldogs' schedule starts to pick up, which it does this week. Georgia just got their first quality win over Arkansas this week before five really tough games against some of the great teams in the SEC.
Notre Dame is going to float around the top-5 all season long, and Ole Miss will be a contender this season as well, from the game they put together on Saturday night against LSU.
Ohio State is going to benefit greatly from the beginning of Big Ten play this week. They open their conference schedule with a game against the Illinois Fighting Illini before a ranked opponent, the Iowa Hawkeyes, who have been playing really well.
Then, the biggest stretch of the year remains in three weeks, when the Buckeyes take on Indiana, and in four weeks, USC and Oregon.
Ohio State will not be able to climb back to the top of the charts this season without someone above them falling, and that is okay. They have plenty of big-time games on their schedule that will keep them in the mix for a postseason run.
The one thing that is absolutely true is that this year's top-25 teams feature several very good programs. There is great football being played all across the country, and we are seeing a lot of parity in the sport. The top programs are great, and some of the depth programs have some fight in them.
As conference play gets going it will be fun to watch how the rest of the season all shakes out. For now, the Buckeyes slot in as the No. 7 team in the AP Poll. If that even means anything at all.
