It's officially Heisman Trophy Season in Columbus, OH, as the Ohio State Buckeyes have two of the top candidates in the country.
On Sunday, the program officially launched its campaigns for both quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Prior to his prolific run this season, Sayin found himself in the middle of a quarterback competition as camp opened in August. There was a fair level of uncertainty around him as the Buckeyes tried to find the next signal caller to take over from National Champion starting quarterback Will Howard.
Outside the program, many believed it was a close competition between Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Inside the program, the players knew that Sayin had something that was special.
One thing that has stood out about Sayin is his intangibles that he's possessed from day one. When he took the field against the Texas Longhorns, his poise and decision-making were off the charts. Sure, he was a little gun-shy against the Longhorns, but who wouldn't be in their first career start?
Since then, the intangible skills have grown, but the tangible ones have been excellent. Sayin is surgically accurate to all levels of the field. He has proved to be elusive when it is needed, but he is everything that the Buckeyes could have asked for at the quarterback position.
Through 10 weeks, the redshirt freshman has 2,188 yards passing yards, 23 touchdowns to just three interceptions while completing 80.7 percent of his passes.
Yes, 80.7 percent of his passes are being completed, and if the season were to end today, that would be an NFL record.
His top receiver, Jeremiah Smith, has picked up right where he left off last year. He is fresh off his second-best game of the season and his best one against a Power Four opponent. In his most recent battle against Penn State, he finished with 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Smith has 55 catches for 725 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. His second score against the Nittany Lions on Saturday was his 25th career score, which officially gave him more career touchdowns than games played (24).
Smith is the best pure football player in the country, but in terms of the Heisman, he is going to have a challenge to over take his teammate.
The reality is that this trophy couldn't mean less to either of these two players. They are dead set on winning a National Championship - winning this award isn't on their minds.
