Ohio State's superstar Jeremiah Smith is off to a ridiculous start to his final season in college football.
Ohio State Buckeyes star Jeremiah Smith added to his historic start to the season with his 11-catch, 202-yard, two-touchdown game against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon.
There are a lot of superlatives to say about Smith, but none seem to do him justice at all. What he is doing on the football field on a weekly basis has never really been seen before and there are truly no signs of him slowing down.
Through five games this season, Smith has compiled 44 catches for 823 yards and nine touchdowns. At a 12-game pace, he is trending towards 105 catches, 1,975 yards, and 23 touchdowns.
A season that finishes with 1,975 yards would be 85 yards short of the greatest single season in the history of college football. That bar was set by Trevor Insley in the 1999 season for Nevada.
What Smith is doing right now is pretty crazy to watch, also because he is making it look so effortless. He is legitimately unguardable, and it is to the point that every time Ohio State runs a play that doesn't end with Smith touching the ball, it is fair to be questioned.
Saturday was a monumental day for Smith as he officially became the Ohio State triple-crown wide receiver. He owns the Ohio State career record for catches, yards, and touchdowns. He also has hopefully 11 more games left to play in which he will only add to it.
For the Buckeyes, it is very clear that this offense truly goes as Smith goes. He accounted for 42 percent of the Buckeyes' offense on Saturday, and over the course of the year, he has accounted for 29.5 percent of the total offense, while playing just 15 of the possible 20 quarters of football.
No matter how you slice it, Smith has been so incredible for Ohio State and is doing something that has only been seen one other time in the history of college football.
He is on the fast track to winning the Heisman Trophy, and the truth is, if he continues to be healthy and stay playing at this level, there is no reason to believe that anyone will be able to beat them.
The Buckeyes will need him just as much as they ever have over the next six weeks. Ohio State has a trap game ahead of them against Maryland next week before the now four-game stretch of Indiana, USC, Oregon, and Northwestern.
The tests continue, but as long as Smith is wearing Scarlet and Gray, they are going to have a chance to beat anyone.
